Warning - stamp duty in NSW
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:34:04 PM »

A bit of advice for those looking at purchasing a new/ second hand camper in NSW.  I recently purchased a fantastic Adventure Cape York camper from South Australia.  After getting the required blue slip (now known as identity and safety report) I went to register the trailer.  They then proceeded to charge me $500 for stamp duty >:D.  I had recalled reading something about caravans and campers being exempt since 2009.  After arguing the point with the person from RTA I did a search on my phone and came across this

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/feesconcessions/stampduty.html

Now you would think this would be enough to convince her but she refused to consider this as the blue slip had a tick against box trailer despite it also clearly stating the brand and type of camper trailer.  I was left with no alternative but to pay and take it up with the office of state revenue. >:D

Luckily I had much better customer service with them.  After going in to their office and showing the rego paper and blue slip they immediately got me to fill out a form and 1 week later a refund in the mail. :D

State revenue 1.  :D  RTA 0.  >:D

I hope the nong at the RTA was appropriately advised of their organisation's out of date information.

With the RTA,s attitude to it's customers I'm surprised they don't charge for walking in their front door.

When I used to register bikes for the shop, I actually took a customer up to Miranda RTA on Pres Ave with me one day as he didnt believe the bullShit they put me through to get a BRAND NEW KTM registered for him on a Friday... that was in the early 80's... nothing has changed in 30+ years.

There's another thread about this on the forum somewhere. Luckily we read it before we bought our trailer. We booked it in to one place for the blue slip but asked if he would use the CVT code rather than the BXT code on the slip first. He said no so we walked away and tried somewhere else until we found someone who was willing.

Saved a lot of money and trouble.

Yep same here, had to open her up tho and to show him the kitchen slide, drawers in the stair well and storage box took up all the internals of the bxt to show it was a purpose built cvt.
I work for the said govt agency and although there are some good practical people there are also some total idiots. On the flip side imagine yourself behind the counter dealing with some of the public, I stood in the grafton rego office not long ago and couldn't believe how some of the customers carried on, lucky I'm not in that part I would have told some of them to f@&k off!
Lastly it is now roads and maritime services (RMS) not Rta. Msb and Rta got merged on 30 oct to cull some top heaviness of having 2 depts, good on lib/nats for this I say!

I think Tassie might be the only state that don't have stamp duty exemption...... The week before Christmas last year I had to fork out nearly $1300 to have my new camper trailer registered. I wasn't overly impressed just before Christmas.

Yep and last budget Qld govt doubled GST!  Intoruduction of GST was intended to rationalise taxes and simpllify the system. Now we will have the carbon tax and super profits tax on top of this. Then they sell it by increasing the welfare sate. They can't manage the state finances and just hit us up as a simple solution- I just love bending over for the government to have its way over and over again...

Don't shoot the messenger sitting behind the counter they're not in the position to change the legislation or to bend it.
But you can ask for the problem to be escalated until you get somebody who can make a decision on your problem.
They could escalate it themselves but it generally depends on the customers attitude at the time.
Be nice and they will mostly help as much as possible.  Its generally the Supervisors or Managers that are able to check and amend individual cases.
What's written on a website no matter who's site it is they will not act on the websites information. They will however act after looking up the relevant Act or Legislation.

Yeah I do work for the State Gov but luckily I don't have customer contact cos' as Flemo says

ha.. you got the money, good job.

It recently took me 3 months to transfer a QLD registration to NSW due to the policy of the RTA and their introduction of a new Blue Slip system. This was a stock standard vehicle that was 13 months old.

Escalation - that didn't seem to work. The head office thought our vehicle was the first one with this issue and would use it as a test case for others in the future. where is the customer service in that?

I must have been extra lucky when I registered my trailer - the lady at the RTA saw the blue slip had box trailer but noted the brand of trailer (Trackabout) and gave me the heads up on the stamp duty exemption and then proceeded to make the paperwork correct so no stamp duty. At least there's one nice person in the RTA (yay Grafton)
