Camping on Stradroke island with CT.
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:50:19 PM »
HI ALL just wondering the best place to set up the CT on Straddy must have a ocean view. Was over there for a week a week ago but not camping. Looked at Flinders beach and Main beach camping areas both looked very tight and very soft to try to turn CT around or backup into a spot.Anybody camped with CT in these spots?Tinkera.

Flinders... not really an ocean view, but at least access to the camping ground is easy as is access to shops, water etc
Main beach is tops, you just need to be set up for the sand and that means lowering the tyre pressures on 4WD and trailer and drive sensible to the conditions, remember momentum is your friend
As for the access points, some of the chutes you would not try, but there's plenty that are quite OK and once you are up just a matter of pick a spot that suits.
I can't say which because often they will change but, there's always a spot somewhere
When you book you are given a mud map, there's one spot about half way down the camping zone, the insode track disappears into the swamp
I have a standard 90 seried Prado and meduim CT (about 650kg), don't have much drama
the only thing with camping on main beach is access to drinking water, closest drinking water is at Pt Lookout, which has it's attractions, namely coffee and ice cream.
but water for washing can be had from the pools in the 18 mile swamp, not as far to go

if you can make it you'll be guaranted an ocean view but be ready if the southeaster blows up, I'd carry extra poles and ropes and not be open to that direction

PM me if you would like some extra info about it

HI Mallory probably a bit spoilt camping along Teewah Beach and such. Both spots I looked at on Straddy looked good but jee,s they where dry and boggy you,d have to launch at a spot and that,s where you,d be camping. That year beach permit I had to buy last week will see me going over again in the new year camping for sure.Probably be a whole new ball game with a good week of rain on the sand that,s for sure.Tinkera.

I can tow my jayco flamingo on Staddie I go to Flinders about camp area 4 through to 6. No problems at all with an ocean view and grass to camp on. The straddie campers are a little different because it is so close to Brisbane and they dont no how to keep their dogs on a leach.

I haven't got much more to add to what has already been said, but here's a few pic's of the same area darrenh camped.

Sign for camping area 6.

Exit off the beach into the camping area 6 was a walk in the park when we were there,
but conditions often change.

Facilities were are good, toilets and dump point.

Plenty of grassy areas to camp.

Hope this helps.

Main beach is nice.  I haven't towed but apart from getting off the beach you would be fine.  Suggest spots 8 through 11 ... I think exit 9 is usually the easiest but they all go up to the one long section.
I've seen many trailers and vans up there over the years.

We camp down Main Beach on average twice per year and it’s fantastic. If you get in early enough you can get some very nice settled spots with flat hard ground to set up on.

Flinders is nice, but a bit busy for my likings.
