Triton canopy - please help us choose.
« on: October 23, 2011, 09:23:33 AM »
We're planning a trip to the centre via the Oonadatta track next year and feel this warrants a few mods to our MN dual cab. So far she's pretty standard with the exception of new suspension and a 2" lift.

First things on our wish list are a canopy and a dual battery system. We were hoping other Triton owners could help us with the decision about which canopy to go with. We were considering the ARB canopy but since then I've seen some that look much better (though I don't know what brand they were, and they might be rubbish quality).

So.... anyone out there got any photos of their canopies or advice on which brands are good, and/or which brands to steer clear of ???

Thanks, Glenyse

Hi,
can't help you with the best brand/ best buy, but make sure you spend the extra and get at least one side (passenger side) with the lift up door - you wont regret it, easy access to the fridge, or the thing you or the kids want that is next to the back window
cheers

I had an ARB canopy on the old triton and it was very good, but I think the Carryboy canopies are more stylish, especially for the MN Triton

I have a Ironman canopy on the Hilux, only had it for a few days, but it certainly looks more stylish than the ARB on, not sure on how well it handles yet, although it has spent the last 12 months in a mine in WA and has held together pretty well.

Probably stay away from the Razorback canopies as the are made out of steel and with the weight they make the tub on a dual cab move too much. Had one on my D40 and on rough roads the canopy used to hit the back of the cab. Also destroyed tub mount rubbers.

A prime feature to look for
Ive got a flexiglass canopy but thats neither here or there.
When I bought my dual cab it had hing UP side windows and I think they are great..make it so much easier to get to things from the side of the ute compared with slide windows.
BUT I have also dog and I also wish i had sliding windows so that I could open one for him so as that he could put his nose out the window.
BUT NOW I SEE you can get hing up side windows with built in sliders as well What a great feature
AND thats the way I would go if I was sourcing a new canopy for myself..who ever had that feature on their canopys..Kind Regards John

Thanks for the info so far

John and Garry - We have 2 dobermans so I think we will go with a slider on one side and a lift up on the other as you've suggested :D

Cracka and Bubba - We were wondering about the quality of the ironman but if it can stand up to mine work I guess it must be ok. Both the ironman and the carryboy look much better than the ARB in my opinion. My only concern would be that I think from memeory the ARB one is rated to 100kg where as the Carryboy is only rated to 85kg though 15kg probably isn't going to make that much of a difference ???

Diesel - Good to know, we'll steer clear of Razorback. Thanks

looking forward to more input! :D

Was talking with the young bloke last weekend about canopy's, he's buying a new Hilux and is fitting a Carryboy. He informs me they have a smooth finish on thee outside surface that can be colour coded to match the car a lot better than the ArB and some others and this finish looks a lot better on newer cars in his opinion. Carn't help with anything else.

I don't think there was an issue with the canopy on that one!

We have a carryboy canopy on our ranger as you will see in the sig photo. Very happy with the look and finish. When they were colour coding it they wern't sure on the code that we sent them so we posted them the fuel flap and they went from there. A very good match. I also like that you can unlock the front section of the side sliding windows from the outside (using the key) and access stuff through the side that way.

Hello Tracey Family,
I have got a 2010 MN Triton with a smooth finish ARB canopy with the built in Roof rack and internal frame to support the load, it also has the slide window on the drivers side with the lift up window on the passenger side just to access stuff on the side of the road in safety. The slide window we found is really good for the dog just to gaze it's nose out of. The only down side to the canopy when we got it was that it only has the lift up front window into the canopy from the rear part of the cab instead of the slide windows which is annoying and the seals in the rear windows are not that crash hot especially for dust, but other than that the canopy is a great piece of kit and the finish really compliments the vehicle.

If you want pic just left me know but other than that check newtriton.net for reviews on other canopies also I'm also on that forum under the same profile and have some pics of my rig.

Hope this helps

Regards

I have a flexiglass with two sliding side windows and internal roof racks.

As was already mentioned by Thirstyviv the rear dust seals are all but useless on most canopies.
I installed two of these earlier this year.I was told they would help pressurize the canopy which keeps the dust out.
http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-canopies-sport-lids/classic-canopies/500Canopy-Vent.php
They have eliminated 99% of the dust incursion.
I must admit they have impressed me...

We have an ARB smooth canopy and heavy duty racks with internal cage on our triton i went thru every different canopy and personally i think the ARB looks the best only other canopy i looked at was the carry boy but a bit more expensive. If you get an ARB get the window in between the cab as a slider not a lift up
just a pain in the arse for me anyway ;D

yep ARB canopy on my triton, but I have heard that they do not offer the front slide window anymore.
I open this window in the dusty conditions to pressurise the canopy and very limited dust gets in.
Otherwise option up the canopy with the dust pressure vents

I have had the canopy on for 3 years and 100,000kms, still in good condition- has not moved and still looks good.

::) Not a worry at all if you dont incorrectly fit airbags and overload your vehicle past the GVM  :P And then expect it to tow your heavy camper trailer over soft dunes

I noticed someone said to stay away from razorback steel canopies, I've had one for a couple of years now and it's by far the best I've ever had or seen. Stronger and more secure than the others, better locking system than most. The roof rails that come with the canopy are already rated to carry 100kg and the roof has been tested to withstand 4 times that amount!

They are fully trimmed/lined inside, have double rotary automotive style locks, rear window demister, option of central locking, they are made in the same way vehicle roofs are made. The rear door isn't just a large plastic or glass window but rather is a framed steel door with a large window lol I sound like an advert but I just love mine and think they are certainly worth looking at if your after a quality canopy.

Mine originally did move a little on extremly rough off-road stuff (rock hoping etc) but once I re-did the clamps myself it's been good since, I believe that they now have a improved mounting hardware as well. To the other person that had one move I'd suggest to check the clamps/fittings are done up correctly and if that doesn't work have a chat to Razorback and see if they can do/suggest anything to help solve your problem. They were good to talk to in all my dealings with them
Cheers Wayne

Thanks everyone for your input and advice - where would we all be without our fellow swaggers?

I think we'll go with the ARB canopy. I do prefer the look of the Carryboy but they are more expensive and I think the angle of the back window will mean a loss of space in the back for our 2 fridges? The Razorback looks pretty swish too but is out of our budget and these bent chassis incidents are making me think the lighter the better  ??? Our local ARB store has a good reputation so at least if there are any problems with fitting we have a bit of comeback.

I've also bookmarked the new triton forum - so between that site and myswag I'll be lucky if I ever get Scott off the internet  :'( - Thanks for the link  :D

I think the Tirton issue with bent chassis is mainly those that have airbags fitted and extended the chassis in some way (spare wheel carrier/unusual tow bars etc) and then also towed something over a peak of a crest. It is a worry though for sure, I'd be looking into any possible issues and what the outcome my be support wise if something did go wrong. I think if they aren't genuine Mits accessories for the vehicle it may cause warranty issues if something did go wrong.
Cheers Wayne
