Near death experiences or geezus moments.
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:18:05 PM »
Not trying to give anyone PTSD or nightmares but thought this could be a learning thread and may fore warn some....

I as talking to a bloke yesterday with a late model TD manual Prado, had a couple of white paint marks on the bullbar...conversation turned to the paint...

Lad was at a mate's property collecting firewood. He had 2 ton on the trailer connected to the Prado and drove back to his mate's house for a brew. His kids, 5 & 3, were in the tractor with his mate following.

They get to the house and the lad jumps out of the Prado and goes inside where the owner meets him. Kids are outside and putting jumpers/coats on from in the Prado.

After the brew they go back outside.....no Prado.....no trailer....As they gaze to the right, the landowner's wife's car is totalled and pushed aside, the shed is half demolished and the trailer is sticking out of the side of the shed!

After a major panic and after locating all kids safe and well they piece the puzzle together.

3yo has climbed through after getting jumper and is playing in the driver's seat. Turns key and motor fires. No handbrake on and in gear. Prado drives off with 3yo at wheel. Hits and pushes (T bone) small white buzzbox out of the way before colliding with and entering shed and stalls.

Lad ALWAYS takes keys out of car when kids around, but as they were with his mate he completly forgot about it. Didn't have the handbrake on either which would have prevented it also.

After they recovered the Prado they tried to key start it as the 3yo did- took multiple attempts to get it to fire and drive....just unlucky. Fortunately none of the kids were injured. Major road nearby and dams etc....

Morale - handbrake on and keys in your pocket with unsupervised kids around.

I'd say the bloke got out of that pretty cheap.  I read that pretty quickly to see the kids didn't get squashed.  The one I remember was a year or so back, we were visiting a mate up north and went along to a bush race meeting.  Great turnout, kids having a ball with all the others etc, etc.  Next morning we go for a walk with 5yr old son.  Have a look at the creek through the fence. BIG hole. Volcanic potholes everywhere,  about 30 metres to the bottom of this gorge, didn't look like that from camp,  weir put into the upper section was only a foot wide, and the next step is over the edge.  Son goes on to tell us that he and a few of the boys were over the other side of the weir yesterday looking around. To this day I still don't know how none of them were killed.  I was a bit steady going around there, and I wasn't with a mob of silly kids.

As a youngster I folded the door back on my first car as it hit the carport post. I forgot to check my mate had left the car in reverse and I started it with the door open as we were working on the engine. Lucky my mate was at the front not the rear of the car. I have never done that again and always anal about checking if the vehicle is in gear before starting.

That's 1 to tell the grandkids about  , but its such a silly mistake to make . I have my keys on me all the time & if I dint its almost a panic till I find them again . I had a friend who purchased an old converted delivery van , known as " The White Elephant " It was parked on a busy street with the wheels chocked as the handbrake was a bit dodgy to say the least . After a run arrived home parked it late at night went to bed . Next morning toddled off to work got a call about noon to say Get Home . Old Whitie had reversed its self slowly across the road down hill 6 houses but it missed the gateway of a house but only by 30cm  That was just before it was disposed of    8)

This was a geezus moment in a similar vein. A mate & I drove from Shark Bay to Karratha one day, which is a bit of a haul especially after a night's fishing, so I was pretty tired when we got to the other mate's place up there where we going to be rewarded with a shower and a lounge. The vehicle - a five-tonne Oka - got parked off the road, on his front verge. It has a turbo timer, and as we had just done a long, hot run, it was left to idle for five minutes before shutting down - i.e. it was in neutral. Unfortunately due to tiredness it was, untypically, left without the handbrake on.

We went into the house, did the meet & greet, had a cuppa, got shown where the shower was, went back out to the Oka and got some clothes and toiletries, then alternated, had a chat, got some more stuff out of the truck, locked it again each time, all good. This was late afternoon. About an hour after we had arrived, one of the neighbours knocked on the door and gave us the news: the Oka had just rolled down the street.

After an hour of us to-ing and fro-ing, probably one pebble had dislodged, and the unmanned bus had started its run. It wheeled itself off the verge, on to the street (at some point here the steering lock would have determined direction), down the gentle slope past kids playing in front yards, past a couple of dozen other vehicles, past 30 or 40 houses, down around the bend and out of sight. We came out the front of the house and I reckon there would have been quite a few geezuses. The bus was nowhere to be seen.

We all ran off down the road in pursuit, and following the path the bus took was just gobsmacking. It missed every car, boat, dog and person in the street, even going around the gradual bend. At the end - an easy 300m - the street turned hard left, but of course the Oka didn't. Straight in front was a wire fence, which it pinged straight through, a wide culvert which it went down, and up the other side of to meet somebody's back fence (which had a gentle lie down), and then it rolled back down to a stop in the culvert.

The only thing it touched in the entire tour, apart from the two fences, was the last light pole - which folded in a door mirror, but was otherwise missed.

I have 2.
One concerns a car and the other, well, a boat I guess.

Car - Teaching SWMBO to drive in Mum's 82model Celica, manual. Reversing up a long straight driveway at idle, gets to the end, no clutch and stalls it.
Was teaching by walking next to the car. When she stalls I open the door to get her out as she is not up to reversing across the street. She starts the car with some throttle on, in gear cause she forgot about the clutch, so under the drivers door I go, SWMBO in an out of control Celica, in reverse, across the street with the door open. Fortunately any damage to the rear of the car was avoided by folding the drivers door forwards against the guard, courtesy of some gum saplings. :-[ :-[

Oh did I forget to mention that Mum and Dad were overseas at the time? Several extremely dodgy calls to the family panel beater and all is good, minor scratches and bruising for me, meh.

Boat- Me and unco pommie mate are on a boys weekend bass fishing, heading to the Paterson river. He had a small ally punt with electric motor and I had a heavy glass canadian canoe and a 2hp mariner to go with it.
Got to Raymond Terrace ampol to fill up and get some last minute stuff, so we fill the metal 5 litre can for the Mariner. We put it back in his van, the can promptly falls over due to some crap in his van, rolls down the pile of gear and lands cleanly across the 100a battery we had for the leccy. As luck (or lack of) would have it, the current flows and blows a hole in the can, arcing and catching the tin on fire, at the bowser, in a petrol station.

I grabbed the can and flung it flaming across the driveway towards open areas away from the pumps, in the process covering my arms and hands in lit petrol, not the most pleasant of experiences. Mate grabs a towel and starts trying to put me out, meanwhile all the pumps have stopped and about 15 people are staring at the trainwreck happening before them. He eventually put me out.

After making thanks and apologies we went fishing of course, although I spent most of the first day sitting in the river, trying to cool my arms off.

And we caught nothing. >:(

To this day SWMBO does not know about this one... ;D

we used to live on a hill and I remember my brother who was 3 at the time was playing in the car knocked it out of gear and down the hill he went crashing through the fence down the bottom of the hill....but another brother once opened the door of a moving car and fell out. That was back in the days before seat belts an child locks on the doors, he was lucky, in the end he had over 50 stitches in his head.

Hi,
friends of a colleague were all packed up, trailer loaded, house cleaned, ready to drive North to catch the evening ferry for a move to the mainland.
Small child climbs into the front seat unsupervised while family were saying final farewells to neighbours......
Yep! On a hill, handbrake released, car and trailer ran down the hill and badly damaged.
Kid had minor injuries I believe.

I am almost paranoid about kids in the front seat, and quietly seethe when I see parents not acting immediately their kid climbs through to the front seat.

cheers

I'm glad to say the following story i can look back on and laugh. I couldn't for a few years. Then i grew up and got over it  :-[ :D

Back in 2004 i drove a large enclosed delivery truck working as a sales rep for Smiths Chips. I parked my truck on a rather steep hill (the steepest one in a town of steep hills) in gear with the handbrake on just as i did every week i delivered to the particular motel i was visiting. The owner stuffed me around and couldn't decide what they wanted which delayed me from getting their order from the truck. When i finally came out to get thier order, my truck was not where i left it. Whilst inside, my handbrake decided it didnt like doing its job anymore, which then put so much pressure on the gear box it shattered and then the whole truck rolled backwards down the hill. Looks like my subconcious new something i didnt, and i had put the front wheels on a slight turn into the gutter which made it so when the truck rolled down the hill, it hit the gutter which sent the truck over to the other gutter on the other side of the road, then it hit that gutter, swung around so the cab was now facing down the hill, then the front hit the gutter, and my truck went to sleep on its side. Where it landed, about 1 metre behind it was a powerpole which it didnt touch, and where the top of the truck now layed, a fence was still in perfect condition about 50cm from the roof. Ans about 3m in front of the truck was an intersection. The only damage was to the truck and a slight dint in the gutter and some tyre marks.

Thankfully no one was hurt and to this day i do not know how it did not run straight down the hill through one of the busiest intersections in town, crossing the highway which on the other side was red rooster and supercheap and no kids were walking past on the foot path it was laying on (it was about 2.30 / 3pm on a monday). Phew!

The next part of the story shows i grew up in a close community. Growing up, My dad used to work for a very popular softdrink company, who used to pick up his machines and stock from the local NQX / QRX Depot, so i knew everyone there too. Everyone knew what my truck looked like (it was the only one like it in town). One of the QRX guys drove past just after it happened (not knowing if i was in the truck or not), and rang dad immediately. Also, word got back to the QRX depot pretty quick, and my partner worked with the boyfriend of one of the girls in the office there, so he quickly found out too. All in this time, i hadnt even have enough time to ring anyone yet! Before the police had time to turn up, my dad and my boyfriend both came screaming to where i was (both in separate cars but i think both of them were on 2 wheels going around the roundabouts on the way). We decided not to tell mum until she got home as she was away for work. No one was hurt we figured.

Unfortunaltey for me, on that particular day, the local newspaper happened to be doing a story at the pub that was also over the road, and came running over taking pictures. A little frazzled - i did the most obvoius thing and told them to get F#$%^& and to F@#$%^ Off! So in the paper the next day, i think i was called "clearly distraught young woman".

Now the worst part of the story comes next! I made the dreadfull phone call to my boss(which was based in another town about 1 hour away), then they sent one of the other guys down in the spare truck and another in a car to pick him up, and then they made me finish my day's run! Funny enough i refused to drive! (I was so dirty i wasn't allowed to just go home) But in hidsight, it was a good thing to get back on the horse that day and finish my run, as i was left with the other truck for the rest of the week. (which was still used up until the day they got rid of the trucks all together as mine was a write off!).

For those that are from Gladstone QLD, you may remeber this story. Yes I am the one who rolled the Smith's truck on Far St without being in it! LOL  :D

And no, i no longer work for that company. lol

Back in 1987 I went to some car races at lakeside in QLD and while walking through the pitts I stopped to look at a turbo commodore.
As i stood there looking under the bonnett I noticed that the front wheel was turning ever so slightly.
I looked in the car to see no one in there then looked at the front to see a couple of kids sitting on a rug then back at the wheel to see it moving faster then........GEEZUS.
I dived in the drivers window and reefed on the handbrake to stop it just as it was starting to pick up speed and it stopped just a couple of feet short of the kids.
By this time the mother had jumped up from her chair thanking me and said one of the kids had just been in the car and must have let the handbrake off.
I didn't realize for a while how lucky those kids were, things like that make you lookout when you have kids of your own.

My geezus moment is will not top anything here but did get the sphincter going.
For anyone that knows Sydney I drove from Rydalmere down Victoria Rd, James Ruse Dr, M4, Cumberland Hwy then Horsley Dr to Smithfield with a fairly heavily loaded box trailer just sitting on the ball ie not fully latched but I did have the safety chain on ;D
