I've got 2 acres, sloping like no ones business, lots of trees and other obstacles - flying fox, cubby house etc. I had a JD 48" deck and gave it a hard time. Poor thing stood up to everything and then some. Its gone to mower heaven now (I pay a bloke to mow the back, and the front get push mowed) but I would buy a JD again for sure.

I have an MTD yardman 16hp 42" cut.  Had it for a few years now - only issue I had was flat battery - which was my fault for using it to run my 12v air compressor alll teh time

We had a Snapper 61" Pro at work as a sub from the dealer, 28hp vanguard motor, the mowing deck was a delight, clean simple lines, good belt system, hard cased spindles, discharge was excellent in medium 150mm grass and very good for 200 to 300mm height grass.
Motor works well in heavy going, low end rev torque is pretty goood considering it is an unleaded motor.
Price about $10k..GST exempt for the price and work ability...value about 8 out of 10.

Our toro just died :-( we are on 5 acres but 4 acres is bush only about 1 acre of lawn (although we use to mow the firebreak as well) it's pretty flat, we were into commercial lawn mowing 15 years ago (back then the JD deck was fragile when left in the hand of employees) never had a cox after the JD went to small tractors however want something that collects as well. Suggestions please.

Depending on your budget, at the low range a JD with catcher system, there're cheap, but they do the job. We had a catcher version for work, lasted 12 months, just could'nt handle the work and the different opperators...typical local government parks and gardens department.
 If you have a look at a mag at the moment which comes out with adds for second hand commercial mowers, you may pick up a bargin.
We have a Walkerwww.walkermowers.com.au/ for work and we use it for the Cemeteries...not bad, good pick up in dry and wet grass, easy reg maintenance locations, but it will set you back 15K, but if you can pick up a second hand job with good hours and maintanence, you never know, you can get extras like a chipper and such.
Its horses for course, have you looked at a Mulching deck option?

I have the 44" Toro, I have a mate who helped me knock $1200 off the price, my 2nd Toro and I lost only $100 off the first one after two years

My sons have a mowing/ gardening business and are a couple of the keenest, hardest workers around ( for young guys that is) but they treat their gear ( mowers & powered equipt) like an ex-girl friend .... jobs done move on to the next...... and don't worry about too much fuss after cutting the grass. They have a Honda push mowers ( wouldn't touch a Toro compared to them) Walker zero turn and a 4wd Kubota out front mower,both Diesel powered run all day on 1/4 to 1/2 tank, at present have over 2000 hrs on each and what they put them through is tough in anyones language...lucky i'm a tad mechanical, for what you want i'd go a Toro or JD zero turn as i have been told the pricing is pretty good lately or alternately look at the trading papers and go for a 2nd hand Kubota or JD they will last you a life time if you keep the servicing done ( oils a cheap expense for any mech equipt) our next will be a lever steered Kubota for sure, test ride to be sure it suits your needs and pocket. keep on mowin :D :D

Ive got a Cox 14hp had it about 6years and it,s never cut a lawn I have 12 acres of land and I cut about 1or 2 acres  a couple times a year if we have rain.
All iv,e done is change the oil clean the filter air replace oil filter and a couple of new sets of blades
this week a new battery.

It just keeps going I love it.

Update on the rancher, Tony sold it off to a fella up the road for nix (i reckon) as tony said he didnt have the time to fix it.  Anyways the fella had a look and found that the cog in the starter motor had karked it again.  We had forgotten that had happened once before. Oh well his gain.  I really didnt have a shed spot for it anyways.
