So you want to get rid of some old tyres?
« on: December 15, 2016, 02:06:10 PM »
I knew the Council hard rubbish collection won't pick up tyres and the lad had a couple he inherited with the new joint he's doing up so I rang around the tips/recycle stations in Adelaide for a quote as to what they'd cost to drop off. Got 3 different amounts for plain car tyres of $15, $10 and $8 each before I searched up this mob (they have a big tyre muncher) so just be aware of the price difference in your neck of the woods, particularly with big fourby tyres, etc-

PS: The skip bin guy was quite clear he'd charge an extra $25 for any tyre he had to fish out at the tip if you tried to smuggle them in the bin

One of my old mans customers owns one of very few of not the only EPA licensed tire shredding facility here in vic and to say the dudes loaded is an understatement shreds the tyres and separates the metal from rubber metal gets recycled and containers of shredded rubber are sent off shore for other manufacturing uses its like a license to print  money. If someone comes up with with a cheap method of recycling tires I'll invest lol ;).

We just spent $450.00 getting rid of ones that had accumulated at work, people love sticking one under their engine when they send it in for a reco. Was quoted $2.70 per tyre and up to  $30 for a solid forklift tyre

Go see any truck/transport companies around. They quite often use tyres as packing between items.
One place I went to couldn't get them off my trailer quick enough.

Saw an article about a research project in QUT were they separate the tyre components and use the black stuff to make an oil product. It will be a gold mine it they can make it work commercially.

Very interesting but it seems GDT have hit a snag according to their video-
http://resourcerecovery.biz/news/gdt-opens-warren-tyre-recovery-plant
Perhaps the tyre shredders I paid $3 a tyre to are feeding the Warren plant or similar, as it would make sense to compact semi loads like that for interstate rather than transport full tyres, bearing in mind they were only ripping them up into saucer size pieces that I could see. You'd also expect that would feed a plant like GDTs much better too.
