Some of the things you can do to help yourself in these situations is firstly, keep a level head and stop and think. If you have an epirb and it is the newer style then keep the registration and contact numbers up to date. If activated these details are the first point of call for responders.
Always let someone know your intentions and leave a copy of your trip plan/itinery with a responsible person.
Carry additional food/water and a first aid kit.
Once activated (epirb) sit and wait. Depending on location/terrrain/weather etc - it may take some time to get to you.
