Return home to find a Ant’s nest under our mattress
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:09:00 AM »
We recently returned after spent 7 days camping on the beach at Stradbroke Island. While camping I found a couple of large ants inside the camper but didn’t think too much about it.

Thought I would the sensible thing and gave the trailer and all our camping gear a really good spring clean to remove the salt & sand.

To my surprise when I removed the mattress to put in the sun to air, I found a rather large ants nest under it with a couple of hundred ants scurrying for shelter. (Lucky I always keep a tin of Morten handy which quickly solved my ant problem)

Upon further investigation I found a little hole of the corner of the CT where the canvas joins to trailer. So was thinking of putting a small blob of silicone to seal the hole.

Just couldn’t tell the wife we were most likely sleeping on top of a ants nest as that would freak her out.

i'm sure that sealing that hole wouldn't have stopped them anyway.. they generally find a way to get into whatever they want.. a good clean out should be done - as you are doing..

i wouldn't tell my wife either..  >:D

Haven't looked for a while but we used pest strips, were called shelltox mini strips could buy them in the supermarket and cut them up smaller and place around the inside of the camper. Not sure if you can still get them but may be worth a look.

LOL!  Tell your wife ... Tell your wife!

We too had some stow-a-ways from home.  The dreaded household Black Ant which when sprayed to death are simply replaced by another section of the Black Ant army with their middle fingers raised (knowing there are millions to replace them should they suffer the same fate).

And they have found the CT!  I think they found a 1mm gap in the rubber around the hard floor, holed up under there for awhile and headed for a quite place once we'd set up.  I also found a small spider on my side of the bed.  Needless to say, the ants comsumed his corpse through the night, before I evicted them as well.
