water filter for water straight out of river

We are thinking of pumping water out of the Murray or Edwards river for drinking etc and thinking of using one of these filters https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inline-Water-Filter-Housing-Sterasyl-Ceramic-Candle-Taste-Odour-Bacteria/252836695397?epid=1353580325&hash=item3ade3dcd65:g:zK4AAOSwAYtWKiOO,   has anybody had any experience with this filter or do you have a system that works and you would like to share the details?   We usually take a few 20L drums of water from home the fill up in the nearest town, but this isa bit of a pain and to use onsite water would be a lot easier.    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not familiar with that brand but many on here use "best" brand (iirc) a similar style unit with good results at less $

I've used a Katadyn Pocket Filter for years and years. It's bloody good - can even remove the colour from red wine. I reckon the Katadyn Expedition would be exactly what you need.

What you most certainly won't need is the price tag. My pocket filter cost about $300 about 30 yeas ago and it's still going strong and only on its second "candle" and it gets a lot of use. I guess you get what you pay for.

Keep in mind, You can reverse flush the inline Guest water filters.
By doing so you extend the life of the filter.

And what you want to do with it, just washing or drinking as well. There are a number of hiking aimed filters that can turn dirty river water into something drinkable but they are pretty slow and would only be useful for drinking water volumes, the B.E.S.T. filters are good for camping and larger volumes but don't know that I would trust them in and of itself to filter river water to a point of making it drinkable, I looked into a while back and decided you would likely want a decent multistage filter setup to get reasonable volumes to drinking standards, a reverse osmosis setup would be best

Depending on how clear the water looks....but most clear looking river water only needs boiling...( I don't even do that if it looks crystal clear )
I use a Clarence filter in the van...was approx $35.

Last time I saw the Murray River it wouldn't be what I would consider "clear" but yes a really good water source would likely be fine with just boiling, a little TDS meter can help you have a better idea of what you are dealing with too.

Last time I saw it, it was at Tom Groggin and it looked almost crystal clear !!
