« on: October 30, 2017, 02:46:37 PM »
Just found this watching a Trackabout video (on their FB page).
https://www.gordoncountry.com.au/
It looks pretty damn good.
Has anyone been here? Comments on it?

Pretty popular place in school holidays and long weekends, but a nice spot when the crowds aren't there...i just happened to look at their website yesterday, think it costs something like $18 a night for adults and $11 a night or kids, and a mandatory vehicle fee of $10 for 2wd sedans /cars and the like and $30 for 4wd's..... so not cheap by any means.

Yes I liked it very much, but also thought it way over priced - greed is creeping into every facet of life in Australia.  Everybody thinks it is their God given right to make a squillion $, especially if self employed.  I won't be going back, but then this isn't the only rip off private camp ground in SE Qld.  If money is of no consequence then go for, lots of options for camp sites.
Just a shame there's no where like this for free any more.  I must be getting old - growing up in the 70's camping fees were an unheard of thing barring caravan parks.
Anyways, here's a few photos. It was a good weekend away, don't get me wrong.

sadly there's a thing called lawsuits and public liability insurance these days, hence paying to camp on properties that like would have cost very little to stay at if at all many years ago. In saying that, the priced some properties and National Parks are charging now, is making staying at them an unattractive proposition.

The thing is, I would anticipate that any insurance payable would be a fixed fee that does not directly relate to an individual visit ie whether I go or not this weekend does not alter the insurance premium.
In their particular case, charging a 4wd fee of $30 is extortion if you don't intend to use the 4wd tracks.  Needs to be a better way to handle that, and one of the reasons its costly.  Virtually zero facilities - it should be national park fees for what is on offer, then the 4wd fee wouldn't sting so much.
Each to their own I guess, if it was 15 minutes from my home then the fuel savings compared to travelling elsewhere make it more viable again.

they likely charge the fee for 4wd's regardless due to not being able to police who drives around the property and who doesn't (it's a big property and has public road through the middle of it)....many say they aren't going driving but later the owners see they have, plenty spoiling it for everyone else. The insurance cost would be fixed and very expensive so needs to be paid regardless as you say, add to that the council fees for road upkeep costs (which ard scarly expensive from owners i have spoken to) etc, etc, etc and you start to see things from the property owners side....to do a fully legit camping property is a very expensive exercise these days. I'm supposed to be heading out that way with mates soon, but the cost has put me off going.

All about supply and demand. If I had 2000 acres of some of the prettiest land you can find and a squillion people wanting to camp on it I'd be charging a bit more too.

There's about 6 different properties to camp on along that stretch of road, but Gordon Country is the biggest and best by far.

If you don't like flies don't go there in summer.
