Rooftop bags

Long time member, long time no post.

Looking for some thoughts on good quality roof top bags.

The two I have come across are drifta and southern cross.

Are there any others to consider?

Have owned a MSA bag for years now, would happily get another one (though i don't use actually use it anymore...lol). The really thick rubber base on them is great for not rubbing through on corrugations, my original Bushranger bag did that early on when we went to Cape York.

I have a rhino bag that is ancient. It is just wearing through the rubber on the top so I don’t think it will last much longer. I think it is 16 years old now as I’m pretty sure we bought it when my oldest daughter was born.

That’s some good quick feedback!

Does the rhino have protection underneath or inside the base? I notice msa refer to that.

Also comparing materials, are they like for like.

Drifta don’t guarantee waterproof but as good as.  Is there such a thing as “guaranteed”?

Out of interest, I notice they talk about storing lightweight things only up top. We are a family of 6 towing an AS and want to get more off the top of the trailer. Would stretcher beds x 4, chairs x 6 and maybe clothes bags x 6 be pushing limits on the roof. Also travel with oztent rv5 which can go on trailer.

I have this R.A.G.E Vinyl bag that I got out of the US. It was the only bag I found that wasn't rhino but fitted perfectly into the rhino half width basket that we have.

The double flaps and neoprene seal on the zip stop all water. We've driven through days of belting rain and never had a drop in the bag.
Heaps of tiedown straps and adjustable buckles to make it tight around your gear.

From memory it was slightly cheaper then the rhino (including shipping from the states) and I'd buy another one if I ever needed to replace it.

I've had a second spare tyre (on rim), camp chairs and cartons of alcohol etc (all at same time) in the MSA bag without issue, the second covering on top pretty much guarantees water stays out. The bag itself is on the heavyish side due to it's thick rubber base, and clipping all the buckles shut did get tiresome if on the go daily (more due to the height of my Cruiser), but that aside i couldn't fault the product itself.

Another vote for the Rhino.  Just spent three weeks in the Pilbara through some awful dust, not a speck inside the Rhino bag.

It's actually my second one, I sold the first with the Prado earlier this year as I knew I would be getting a larger roof rack and wanted the larger bag to go with it. Zero problems with either.

Nope there's a big flap closed with Velcro that covers the zips.

Custom made to by camper bloke down Somerville... have any size and tie points handles/zippers openings/shorterners you like fitted while he makes it.
