Big Lap prep is overwhelming me!!

I'm beginning to think I've lost my mind.  So MANY things to do and only one month left to do them all! 

I have a camper trailer on order and nothing to tow her with?!  Who convinced me that order was a good idea? 

Estimating insurance costs...
Deciding what aftermarket work on the tug is the most important...
Finding a reliable mechanic to do the work cause we don't have the space...
Selling the contents of my house...
Not killing my partner cause he gets to go to a job while I handle all the things...
Find a tug in the price range - and securing time to see it and test drive it WITH partner...

I need inspiration stories to keep me going. 

...Or a good wine and a camp...

That first night after the drive out the gate will surely make up for all the running around now, and the many other nights after when us mortals are slaving away at work living through the trip reports and photos.

Keep asking questions and the brains trust here are a helpful lot, maybe just glance through anything from Speewa or Bird

Make a list if you haven't already and do a few of the easier things first, it helps to make you feel like you are making headway, then work backwards from your departure date setting dates when things will need to be done by and start ticking them off.

I would probably try and schedule a shakedown weekend away in there as well.

A couple of points for you
1/ after market work, do NEED it, WANT it or just think it looks cool
2/ insurance costs, pick up the phone
3/ you can always put it in storage
4/ get the cask, drink it then kill him and take the new camper out yourself

1/ after market work, decide on what type of car, then look for a late model 2nd hander that already has all the fruit, let owner #1 suffer the new car depreciation. or you can add stuff along the trip, theres lots of 4wd shops around the country
2/ insurance costs, pick up the phone - and call a broker, let them do all the leg work for you.
3/ you can always put it in storage - or leave it with a trusted friend/family member to sell later
4/ don't kill him just yet, you will need someone to pamper you when the trip starts

Haha Spada!!  He says we should all know he doesn't do pampering...  Guess I'll have to kill him and keep the wine and the camper for myself LOL. 

Gotten the insurance stuff taken care of I think... CIL quote is like a quarter of what I had budgeted - so that was nice. 

The plan was to leave a lot of our "stuff" with a good friend, but sadly he just got redundancy paperwork.  So there is now a risk he'll be selling up and going back to India in the middle of our lap.  That was a wrench in the works, but as sad as I am about having to thin our stuff even further, I'm much more unhappy about the state of IT consulting jobs.  At least having finished my last gig a few months ago I know longer worry about where to find my next client. 


As for the tug - Lookin' for a early 2000s model Diesel Automatic Landcruiser or Disco right now.  Doesn't have to be super flash, but must be in excellent mechanical nic and prefer less than 300,000km. 
   
Could take a manual - both Pat and I can drive one... just never gone off road with one.  I'm used to big F350's and 6-slant gooseneck horse trailers.   
With the aftermarket modifications my list looks a bit like this right now...
     Need:
          1.  7 pin flat electric brake controller -required for the trailer
          2. Ando plug -required for the trailer
          3.  Snorkel cause we intend on water crossings in several places - For the right tug we would forego this and do some rerouting but would really rather not have to. 
          4.  Diff breathers - see above?

     Want:
         1. Dual Battery setup - prolly really over-kill
         2.  Extended or Secondary Fuel tank - this is more about ensuring we can do some big tracks with minimal fuel risk.  I know it can be done with the standard 95 ltr tank with strategic fuel stops and we'll carry 40 ltrs of spare in the jerries...       

Looks Neat:
       1.  After 5 years of the leopard print Pajero with the Christmas lights in the headliner... I'm good with not standing out. - Speaking of, anyone want an 88 Pajero that I wouldn't trust to get me to Canberra much less around the country as a project truck or a prop for a porno?

Snorkel can be added on an early stop if you HAD to do it... Like someone else said, plenty of 4WD shops around the place. Hopefully you can pick one up that already has one. Even better. Just check its all sealed properly though...

We have dual long-range tanks and it is one modification we definitely don't regret spending the cash on. Its nice not being "forced" to fill up when you hear rumours of dodgy fuel (and we have all the additional filters etc. for dirty fuel, but would rather not risk it!), or when prices are sky-high (sometimes unavoidable). You also save a LOT of time if you're not having to fill up (especially if its from jerry cans!). While its not an essential modification, it is a really, really nice one to have!

Good luck with the trip prepping. This will be us in the not so distant future.

Try to think of this a s reallllllly long weekend away . Your still in Aus so there is no money exchange  & mostly you will understand the locals .
The only thing is you wont be a local so you will have to create your own world where ever you wonder . lf it breaks ask around to get it fixed , get food at the supermarket & grog at the bottle shop /pub . Much the same as you would be doing at home . The big difference is you seeing things that are new to you , Enjoy   .
You are stepping out into an largely unknown world from the Comfort Zone you have now  .    Treg Up & Make Dust
