Costs/benefits of solar/battery upgrade
« on: August 19, 2017, 10:52:09 PM »
Mods feel free to move thread if it doesn't belong here. Today i counted up the cost of my upgraded ( 2nd AGM/DC and 2nd Smart Charger , plus wiring to Camper and new Inverter ), gave myself a shock ! , over 1.000$ in gear and the work was done for free , mainly by myself . Ive had my Camper about five years and done about 30th KM and 60 to 70 night stays with it , Kimberley's , Gulf , Kakadu and many smaller trips , most free camping or 10$ no power sites. I reckon the free camp and cheapie sites have paid for my very basic Camper and set up until now . Besides retaining the value of the asset and the enjoyment of being able to travel and stay where i want , i reckon ill have to spend another 50 to 70 nights free/cheap camping to square up ! , oh well gives me an excuse to go eh ! , i have posted this elsewhere , cheers.

Good stuff! I setup my battery system not to save $$$ but to give me theoretically unlimited lighting and fridge power. I did a trip for 6 weeks and never had the camper externally charged (either 240V or from the car) and had a full battery at the end of each day.

Just remember the more you use it the cheaper it becomes!!!!!

Yep...you cant put too much worry into being able to camp, enjoy life and see the bush.  Once your dead...your dead!  Buy once and buy right..
Having lots of friends on farcebook is the same as having lots of money in monopoly...means absolutely nothing!!

Thanks for replies . Yes having sufficient power all the time is great , as I move every or every second day the 4wd does most of it . Only problem is if one wants to run an A/C , the only thing that will do is a Gennie !
