Black Label charter out of Cairns is a great charter. The owner / operator is a guy called Mark. Search for their Facebook page, he puts a lot of effort into chasing the blacks when in season.

I caught a 1200lb last October with him - almost killed me but I survived just - 2.5hrs in the chair.

You'll notice from that post above that the Blacks up in Cairns are bigger fish then I mentioned previous, down around the Sunny Coast and Goldy you won't get them that size, they'll be much smaller then the Blues. If you want a once in a life time fish here in Oz then Cairns is your best chance of getting it which is why I recommend there in my first reply, you can get big fish elsewhere, but not in the numbers that Cairns has them.

I’ve been doing a bit of research myself as I’m treating myself to a once in a lifetime fishing trip and so far Nomad sports fishing are winning if far North QLD. Doing my research I quickly found out isn’t going to be a cheap trip, but catching a big GT is on my bucket list and I will only be able to go on a trip like this once, so I have to make sure I get it right.

Thing I like about these guys is you don’t have a dozen guys fighting for space on the rear deck of the boat, but rather they have tenders which take 3 fisherman each fishing places big boats just can’t go.

the cost of running these boats is pretty exxy, hence why it costs so much to go on one of those trips. Just the marina costs and insurance on my mates boat is something like $10K a year, add to that we burnt around $500 - $600 a day in fuel when out chasing Marlin, regular mechanical service costs on the boat (you don't want to break down when 30 Nautical Miles offshore),  then there's the Skipper and crew that need to get paid, the heavy tackle rods aren't cheap, etc etc etc... so not hard to understand why it's big $$$ to go out on a charter boat that gives you a once in a lifetime experience.

Fully agree. With Nomad the boat predominately stays out to sea between Cairns to Cape York, so instead of Marina costs they need to factor in the cost of boats/barges going out to the mother ship to restock, then they also have fuel for the mother ship which is constantly moving spots while your out fishing all day, 4 tenors, wages for 4 guides, Captain on the mother ship and a chef. Then the cost of quality gear and would hate to think that insurance costs. Plus staff at head office to run the show.

In the past I've paid good Money for a fishing charter off Airlie beach and the whole boat didn't catch a fish in 6 hours, then did a trip in Weipa where we only caught Bream and small cod. I can catch those 2 fish in my own boat at a faction on the cost.

Nothing against nomad and Damon, it's an awesome setup. But if money is an issue, someone like ocean blue charters in Vanuatu can put you onto vermin like doggies and gt's more reliably and cheaper. And you stay at a resort. I am all for Aussie charters but there are better places to catch rats of the sea.
I second Craig's recommendation of smithy for local work. Ring him and tell him what you want to target and he will book the right dates for you. The bloke has won more game fishing comps than just about anyone. He lives and breathes fishing.

Portland has plenty of charters chasing tuna, some specialise chasing 100kg barrels, approx $300 per person

Nothing is booked yet so welcome any feedback, so just wondering if you have had any experience with Ocean Blue charters in Vanuatu as this is place is also on my radar.  The online reviews rave about the venue, accommodation, boats & crews, but the lack of actual fish caught is also mentioned multiple times which is a concern.

are the three trips I've done. If you are chasing something in particular, ring the guys and have a chat about the best times etc. EG Dogtooth bite best at night and on bait, but that's not much fun for most punters.

The more time you can afford the further they can run chasing them if they aren't biting - we've all had cracker days and also days where just nothing bites. Just because you've outlayed a lot of cash doesn't change that unfortunately.

Ocean blue does the whole package, but look to have gotten a bit more expensive than I remembered.
