Tutoring for the kids when on the big lap?
« on: February 19, 2017, 10:57:42 PM »
Ok, so the missus and i are having some pretty good discussion around doing part of the big lap in the next 12 months or so. She's curious as to how many of you out there that have done it with kids could have/ should have used a tutor along the way to help out with some of the home schooling packages?
If so, what did or would you be prepared to pay for a quality session with a well qualified tutor?

Thanks in advance.

Are you currently in NSW? If so there is a public school of distance, specialise in dealing with families travelling.  We've been speaking with them and love the model and their attitudes.

Hi Jules,

Thanks for the information, I'll pass that onto the missus to look into more but it sounds like we can organise all the education packs required through the kids schools here in SA.

I'm actually looking trying to guage if there is much likelihood of some cash work for the missus whilst we are traveling doing tutoring, as she is s qualified high school teacher with a maths science and special needs background.

We have spoken to parents with kids who have also been considering this issue.  A response in many cases has been that they approached the school which the child attends and have had session packs prepared for them... the children then do these at times which fit with the travel schedule.
Some have also kept diaries and undertaken maths and spelling type activities as part of these:  fuel use, kilometres travelled, distance between towns, costing of different items in different places, etc etc etc.  Even interactions or observations produce much knowledge.
I believe children learn so much about life and living while travelling that the educational experience is far greater than what can be learned in a class room.
There is also a distance learning school in Victoria.  http://www.distance.vic.edu.au/    which may be of some assistance to you...

Gday mate

2014 we did the big lap around Oz for the year.

We had full support from our school to do this ourselves with their help, however the Education department had other Ideas. We wrote support letters from our selves and so did the school but to no avail.

We were forced to use Distance Education and It was a real pain in the ass.

Getting work sent to us through Toll was their preferred method which was absolutely useless and the mail was always a hassle having to nominate a post office to send to.

In saying this we made the kids do a journal entry every day, they read heaps of books over the year and we mainly focussed on the Maths and English, the rest we sent back unfinished. At first they were quite pushy however over a few months they stopped hassling us and excepted the way we wanted to teach our kids.

The kids returned to their normal school in 2015 with no dramas at all.
If you can get away with doing It yourself and are confident they will get what they need to fit back in to school on your return then go for it.

Good luck

Hey Smarty G , Might pay to look at the places your intending to stay at for a period of time  and put a hit list of schools etc in the area together and email them,  And ask them to post up a flyer on the Notice boards / school news letter of the likely date you will be in town / contact number etc ..
Without being nasty,  The biggest concern  I can see for me as a parent would be, you may not be around long enough in one place to be much of a benefit to the kids that need some tutoring .

We are from SA currently 6 months in and traveling indefinitely at this stage, we had no issues and heaps of help from the education department here in SA. We are in evendale tassie atm and stopped to work for 5 weeks so we put the kids in the local school, they love it.

I don't know if people traveling, most probably on a tight budget, would stump up for a tutor, though there is definitely a need. Most people seem to think that just being an adult/parent equips you to teach your child. Unfortunately this is not the case and in fact it can often be harder to teach your own child than someone else's.
My wife is a teacher who specialises in early childhood development and behavior management and pretty much every extended trip we take she ends up offering to provide assistance (free of charge) to parents that are struggling to get kids to do school work.

Thanks all for the feedback so far. Keep it coming. Certainly more interested in the work opportunities that may present for a tutor and was thinking more for assistance to parents of kids also travelling as some of you have touched on bit do like the idea of notice in local schools if we are going to hang out somewhere for a month or two.
Leahy i certainly agree on tight budget concerns for the parents, has to make for challenging times if child isn't prepared to accept the parents help.

Smarty G, If your heading out into areas that are covered by school of the air or todays  distance education equivalent I reckon there would be a few stations that would welcome a tutor to assist there in house school teachers ..Could be an opportunity for both of you and get a paid trip out of it..
Staff always go on holidays or station mistress has to go away on important trips  etc .
