Caravans in a cyclone ??????
« on: December 01, 2016, 02:48:17 PM »

I suppose this is directed to those who own a caravan and don't have cover  and of course to those in cyclone areas.
What would you do ??....Hook up the van and head west ??......Try and find under cover storage.......   Any suggestions ????

                                                       Cheers Tracker. ??? ??? ???

Good insurance,  and pray that it gets blown away.
Or if possible hook up an head Sth.
If a good cyclone does go through  the 1 night of terror means 2 weeks without fresh water and power. Not to mention the flow on effect to access fuel and fresh food.

Life's wasn't meant to be fair.
Well so I've been told. ..

Take care of your family first

Would depend on the category.

Cat 1and Cat 2 Id probably wouldn’t be too concerned,
Direct hit Cat 3 I’d be making plans to store it somewhere safe,
Direct hit Cat 4 or 5 Head west 400 or 500 K’s inland.

I keep our van in a clients shed.

Power connected so everything is charged up etc and her and I have a key.
I pick it a few days before we use it and drop it back to the shed a couple of days after we get back.

In fact, after the week-end just gone, we took it down there on Tuesday.
It will stay there now until Xmas.

I wouldn't have any confidence leaving a caravan out in the open during a cyclone. When we lived in port hedland in our caravan we used to pack it all up and i'd store it in the shed at work during any cyclone. If I was in that situation again I'd either make sure it was stored somewhere safe or move it out of the area.

My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately you don't get treated well by insurance companies for trying to d the right thing. Don't ask how I know. >:( >:( >:(

The storm that hit Brisbane 2 Sundays ago was cat 2 (158 kph). I'd be real afraid in a caravan. We were lucky it got the airport and port rather than residential areas. I've been watching CCTV footage as part of my job. As usual it's flying debris that does the most damage.

We would of course be prepared, i.e. van Staked and roped down, we wouldn’t just leave it to blow away

I get that, and you are from Townsville. I would suggest that the best advice for someone who has not experienced the wonder of camping in a cat 2 up close would be get out if you have the prior warning and opportunity - be somewhere where the cyclone is not. Chances are there will be cut roads and stuff all services as a result anyway and you could find yourself quickly becoming a burden on emergence services. Falling trees and flying debris will destroy a van (no matter how well prepared) very quickly.

One way to see what  and how a van would go in a cyclone .. Get an empty tissue box throw it on the ground, get the leaf blower  and point it at it and rev it up .
In all seriousness get it out of the area or into a well constructed shelter even then have  good insurance cover .

I don’t think Tracker would be staying in the Caravan, I certainly wouldn’t be. Just prepare it and leave.
