An easy ? for Patrol Drivers

Just helping a mate out and we're looking at Patrols.
Not seeing a model advertised which has a back seat suitable for someone to sit in the center, for more than a run to the shops and back.
Is there a model with a full width rear seat (2nd row) and even a head rest in the center.
Kids are getting bigger and the 1" gap between the split fold and no head rest makes it a bit uncomfortable.

As Callmejoe said, only the Y62 

Unfortunately the GU series (nor GQ from memory?) didn't have any variants that had a 60/40 split.
I was in the same boat with my youngest hitting 10-11 and on the tall side.
I had a 98 GU and did a bit of research as I wondered if a seat from and 80 or 100 series could be modified to fit, but nobody seemed to have tried it. Couldn't even find a cheap Toyota seat for sale that I could tinker with.
I found absolutely nothing on the internet at the time offering a solution.
Maybe everyone with 3 kids just gets a Cruiser or Paj?

It seems it is a 100 series he'll have to get.
Sadly, a given sum of $ gets more toys on a 2nd hand Pootrol then L/C.
The 80's have the 50/50 type also.
The GXL 100's have a 60/40 type, but the preferred one is in the 105 series RV which is solid, I'm trying to get one for mine.

I grew up in a family of 5 (3 boys) in GQ and GU Patrol and besides my mum none of us are petite. We never used the third row seats removed day of delivery and wrapped in plastic for when sold. We did many trips to Fraser Is like this Brisbane to Melbourne and back a few times even as recently as when youngest bro about 14, another in between and me at 25. I don't ever remember anyone complaining about the gap seat being uncomfortable or unbearable. We recently did a trip to Fraser with two toddlers so baby seats on the doors of middle row and adults everywhere else and no one complained about the middle. I even did a few stints in it and was fine.

In all honesty I would say the biggest issue is if you need to fit more than two baby seats as that means you have to set one up in the third row stuffing your luggage area up. If that happens I will have to give up my solid axles for a 'soft roader' (200 or Y62) with IFS/IRS. I couldn't tolerate the uncomfortable ride day in day out for everyone by going to a 70series wagon or dual cab.

I my self have not tried it , but in some of  the earlier Nissan Patrol MQ series had been fitted with a full width second row seat that the back can be either folded flat or double fold to an upright forward position.

I did have one of these that I gave to my brother, it did bolt straight in to his MK Nissan but not sure about the direct fit into either the GQ or the GU.

Its not a case of being a Precious Princess. Just comfortable.
We find that we need to sit in the middle ourselves to separate the fighting kids by putting 1 up front, my friend does the same.
Having a comfy middle seat is for that reason, I sat on one, yep, I'd cruise around Fraser sure, multiple stops, easy. But 900 ks in a day, no chance.

We pack the wooden spoon, it lies on the dash, has a smiley face one side, angry face the other.

 I hear where you are coming from DaveR , The 80 series in the poverty pack have a one piece  backrest but with only two headrests ,

 your reasons for the comfort in seating is one of the main reasons we are keeping our old girl going so we can accomodate our family of 6

Go a DIY solution .. remove the factory rear seat upper cushion, fit up a sheet of 7 mm ply to the metal seat uprights or fab up an insert section into the seat frame and get it reupholstered  to suit or fitted with a seat cover ... Done .

How bloody tall are they? Head rest would only come in to play, if they were 16/17yr olds? 

The third row of seats in my GU, were ok for up to 10/12yr old.

It is for Adults also.
No 3rd row to be used.

The only time that I ever use headrests, is if I am in need of a sleep after a skin full and then I need to put the seat back, because they are not in a position for normal use but to stop ya from whiplash.

Guilty, I got a precious back.
It likes to be comfy on a trip. Which is why I foolishly sold my Troopy.
Also.
I like to sit between the twins in the back when I can.
The bloke who I was chatting with that started all this, he is a bit the same. Likes to stretch out in the middle of the back and let someone else drive, may even sneak 1 of these  in also.

Aside from being precious, fact is the centre second row has a lap belt  and no headrest, so whiplash will be pretty severe in an accident.   Personally I'm usually in the "it'll never happen to me" camp, but I married a theatre nurse who overthinks all scenarios, so we  erred on the side of increased perceived safety when we changed from the unbreakable GU.

Discipline? 7 kids in our tribe, whoever was doing the fighting copped a whack from a hand comin' over the front seat...probably why we always argued at the start about who was getting right in the back cargo area - we always had wagons 
If that didn't stop us, the brakes came on and the fighters got dumped on the side of the road. Ol' boy always came back after a couple of minutes, but we were to scared to see the pattern  LOL

I've got a Y60 with a full back seat, and blokes are changing their front seats over to (mostly) XR6/8's, but there is one bloke (that I know of) who's put front and backs from a Territory into his Y60

In order to have an opinion on this, I sat in the back for the first time last week in the middle for an hour trip.

The seat part was comfortable enough, it was the back that got me. In our 2010 the middle has two arm rests that fold down, they have some cushioning on them when folded up but it gets uncomfortable after awhile.

My opinion, use a combination of two back seats, newer for the lower seat part and an older/do back without the fold down armrests.
