New Windscreen Noise
« on: July 09, 2016, 09:02:04 PM »
Took advantage of my insurance policy, just before its annual renewal, to replace the original screen on the ute.

First drive today...well it seems noisier than it was before above 80km/h. Is this normal or should I be contacting the installer?

Cheers!

Hey Chilli, Are all the windscreen trims sitting flush like before ? Also might pay to do a leak test if you can .. Had a new screen fitted to the Four runner   [  it seamed noisier too].  The screen didnt last long till it got cracked  and had to be replaced for rego ..
Done by a different mob the second time round and they found a gap in the sealant bead, down the left hand windscreen  pillar .
Seem to remember the first lot, mentioned they had trouble with getting the trims to fit back on.

Edz, yeah the trims look fine and the noise is not from a particular area, just everywhere! Was fitted by the local branch of a national big national company. Car is outside tonight, and it's pissing down, so that should test for leaks.

Was wondering if aftermarket glass is thinner?

Thanks Swannie, will call you tomorrow

Cheers!

I had one of mine replaced five times for one windscreen and one of the times turned out to be a hole in the sealant. Only a couple of millimetres but caused a lot of extra noise. Found it as ended up with a leak
Need to get the backside into gear and get out camping

Just to be clear, I have never needed to replace a windscreen before; a combination of luck and many company cars I guess! So my question was "is this something to expect with non OEM glass?" not a go at the fitting as the job looks very neat and the dude that did the fitting (at home) was excellent.

Cheers!

Had mine replace three time with the same large national mob at insurance cost. Trims making noise and lifted about 1cm, didn't fit sun tint as requested then scratched the air vent panel. Replaced trims and stuffed the job again.

Finally had to take the car to a panel and paint for a respray of the effected panel. Had a private premier window fitter finish the job at the Insurance cost. Was absolutely disgusted with the kids they sent from the national mob.

So you need to request a experienced fitter as it seams like they go through staff.

Most windcscreens are made out of the same Chinese factories these days. They are all same thickness which is 6:76 automotive Lam, which consists of 2x 3mm pieces of glass stuck together with a .76 vinyl interlayer

They don't make windscreens or fitters like they used to.  I have 2 cars which had to have new windscreens fitted and both had to be redone.
1st was the 80 series, windscreen was not placed properly, sealing around the rubber was bubbly, and he fitted a seal that needed trim to be inserted which he killed when removing it. Told me to go by a new one. Trim was dearer than the windscreen. Was replaced by an old guy, done right and no trim was needed.
2nd was the Corolla. Rubber seal peeled away from the car within a week, windscreen looked sandblasted on cold damp mornings. Tried cleaning it a few times , didn't improve it. Replaced again with an older gent and no problems.

His mistake was actually taking the rubber off the body. If you just remove the metal trim, hook the windscreen in and reveal glass to rubber. Then the original seal rubber to body remains factory sealed :)

I think the original rubber had see its days. Think it had gone hard and that's why he had to remove it. But he should have used a trim less rubber to replace it. even if he did it was not seated right and had to be redone anyway.  Had the rear on replace in Cairns and they left the rubber in then.
