Vacuum flask

This is a serious question.

The best vacuum  flask I had was about 50 years ago (it was an old one) and it was a thermos. Glass interior air insulator with little rubber feet.

The positively worst vacuum flask I just purchased was a thermos their so called new one with a “carbon” insulation.  What an absolute lot of crap. Will not keep boiling water hot for more than an hour. After that not worth making a cup of tea with.

So what’s everyone’s recommendations of the pick of the new ones?

I have a Stanley Brand tradie's 6 cup flask and 2 Thermos Brand stainless steel flasks (a 6 cup and a 2 cup).
Very happy with all three, although while the 6 cup one's will last overnight, the 2 cup one will only last 6 hours.  I have bought replacement stoppers for the Stanley one and know I can get them for the Thermos's if needed.

I've tried the cheapies and just a waste of time.

We have a Stainless Steel Thermos -1 litre I think - just the bullet looking one with black inside cap. Bought it from Harris Scarfe a couple of years ago replacing an Arcosteel one that is the same but has a pop up valve for pouring. I prefer the Thermos one. I think it stays hotter longer. Not brilliant but keeps water hot for coffee up to about 8hrs. I find the key is to do a double boil - boil the kettle and fill it, then boil the kettle again, empty the flask and refill with the new water.
Harris Scarfe or Big W often have sales on these type of "kitchen wear" and you can get them up to half price.

From  a quick search of the web the Thermos "Nissan" seem to come out top rated.

Made by same company bu the "Thermos" brand comes out worst. Interesting because they are the most expensive.

Anyhow keep it coming.

We were just chatting about this dropping on the drive to drop the crew at kung pow chicken or some other martial art.

I reckon you cant beat the glass ones.  Until they go bang of course.

Hi,
   we have had a Thermos SS flask for years, very happy with it.


Others (arcosteel etc) are ok, but I now won't get one with the pop-open tops again.
They are difficult to clean, the rubber seals are flimsy, and they are prone to leakage.


You can get a bit more insulation by wrapping them in a towel; yes, it does somewhat defeat the purpose of buying one, but wrapped in a towel and stored in a gumboot or similar will keep them hot for considerably longer.

HI The best Flask we have is a cheap glass one with plastic outer, I unscrewed the bottom and filled with expander
foam, A lot harder to brake glass scurvies 4wding   and keeps hot for day

We have a couple of 500ml Tupperware Flasks that stay hot overnight. Were hot enough for a cuppa at breaky.

Same here. Ours would easily be 20yo.
It lives in the camper and has acquired a ding or 2, but it still works as well as the day we bought it.

Flasks are fun - I'll try and make this short but about 5 years ago I set out to get
the best flask.
I investigated many models and types including the Stanley SS 1.9 litre item which had "keeps water hot for 24hrs "
on its label.

Over 12 months I proved this to be incorrect in such a way that Stanley heard about it via Exploroz posts and
ended up admitting a mistake was made and stopped supplying that item until corrected.

Apparently there are different versions for different markets.

One day a big box from Stanley arrived and it contained some 30 flasks of all kinds along with a thank you.

In it was another 1.9lt flask and it keeps water hot such that in windless conditions it will keep water hot enough for coffee
(> 60c ) 24 hrs after filling.

No other flask I measured has worked so well - was it a selected item just for me ?

I have never needed another flask so I can't be sure but a year later Stanley re-introduced the model
and with a new 24 hr label.

i have an old aladdin filler 290 plastic thermos and it keeps water hot enough for coffee and tea for over 24 hours, no worries at all...

was my grandad's, so it is pretty old...

Same here Foo, and is still the best one we own.
It amazes me how hot the water stays in this one compared to our others. 

I recently sanded it back and resprayed with a black red black coats and rubbed it back so the red coat came through. Looks like new and just as good as when I bought it!
Hate to see what is inside it as it must be toxic or something as they don't make them like this anymore.

I used to use Denture cleaner to clean the inside of it but don't normally put anything other that boiling water in it now.
