new camper under $10000
« on: June 18, 2016, 03:22:56 PM »
Howdy guys and gals,

Just joined the forum but had been lurking for a while before joining. Anyways I'm looking to buy a camper within the next 12-24 months and am just after a few opinions. Does anyone have any decent brands to look into? Looking for something simple, under $10000 and available in Queensland. I really like the look of the Outback Sturt but they don't seem to sell them anywhere in Qld.
Any help with some brands/makers to look into would be appreciated.
Cheers :)

Hi There
I assume your looking at the outback sturt due to the rear fold set up and the teriffic space behind the bed.
Good luck finding 1 in the $ range you have in mind, they are a good camper, and hold value for it.

Modcon, yes I am biased, have a model that is rear fold. Some show up on the net here in Gods Country from time to time, I highly recommend them, and the rear fold set up is so easy, especially when you park in the horrible white lines at a van park.

Here is my build thread which may be of use for you.

Cheers DaveR,
I haven't really looked at Modcon although they definitely look the goods! I know I'll most likely never find a Sturt for the dollars available but I just love the design and simplicity of them. At the moment everything is still in the "thinking about it" stage. Did you think it was worth it to build your own camper? I'm almost thinking about buying a cheap second hand trailer with a tent and then adding all the mods as I need them. I think it would be a bit more trouble than it's worth and finding the time would be tricky. There's just too many options out there!

Thanks for the info

It sounds like you need to try this tried and tested technique
1. Get a box of your preferred  on ice
2. A slave to fetch more
3. allow a week worth of time
4. look through the many build threads and My Camper threads here in Myswag to find what ideas may suit your needs.

The questions you pose just now can't be answered by anyone other than you. I , along with many others here, loitered sniffing around to try to find what suits our needs.
There are a million options out there, and some good quality bargains to be had 2nd hand as well. I'd have  2nd hand Aussie CT over a new import any day,  this is due to canvas quality alone.

I have a Sturt - great camper .
It was less than your budget , but it's over 10 yrs old .
They do come up , be prepared to travel and pounce . Also have a look at the Canning , very similar .

Sorry led you slightly astray - Newell is another good version .

There are 2 Sturts for sale - both in Vic
1 is $7500 the other is $10,000
Winter is the best time to buy ..... School hold coming up its not far to Vic .

I have no connection to either - but I first looked at Outback Sturt trailers approx 15 yrs ago , and they are still impressive - just haven't changed much .
Simple proven design . Just works .
Will be off into the desert with mine in approx 3 weeks

Thanks guys!
Trust me I've been stewing and googling over a bunch of different types haha I spent a few hours (maybe days?) going through all the build threads and some are definitely amazing. I basically want a small maybe 10 foot camper trailer with solid canvas and bullet proof/idiot proof design. I'm in North/central Queensland and there's not a whole lot around here apart from Jayco and Johnno's which are a few hours away. It's a good excuse to google/rum/research I guess!

There are so many quality second hand campers available that have barely been used and some which haven't I can't understand why if on a budget you would buy new.

Yep, Doesn't have to be new, I was more after some brands/models to look for and research to base my choices on. So for instance if I see an Outback Sturt second hand that's somewhere I would be able to look at, I can say to myself "hey I like the Sturt I might go look at that". Pretty much just narrowing down the criteria as I plod along and eventually find out what would be good or not so good.

Yep agree, that budget gets a pretty good used camper at much higher specs than a new one.
