If the solenoid setup is the same as Hilux’s, then it’s a common issue with the contacts burning out.  Happen to my Hilux a few years, you had to key it up to half a dozen times before it would fire.  Pulled the starter one weekend and filed the contacts clean.  Good as gold with no issues for the next 6 months.  Then when I pulled the gearbox to do the clutch, I grabbed a contact kit for $40 and replaced them.  No issues from then on.


Keep the old starter and clean or replace the contacts for a spare.

Same on my old Forerunner. Except I bought new contacts from the local autoelec for 8 bucks the pair. Toyota wante $25 each for them.

The kit I got for $40 came with the 2 contacts and a new plunger.  Not surprised at Toyota's price...
