DVD player Headrests

Thinking of getting some of the dvd player headrests to go in my 79 series for the kids as a Xmas present, wondering what i should look out for with them?
My previous vehicle had removable dvd players that were just hung off the backs of the seats in the vehicle as they were SAAS seats that didn't have removable headrests, but i want to put the headrest type in this vehicle now as the others don't look real nice IMHO. So what should i be looking for, and anybody know of somewhere in Brisbane that sells them at a good price and does install of them aswell, as I assume they need to have some sort of permanent power supply run to them through the seats?

Any consideration to getting a couple of iPads and a wireless hdd for movies.

Just need to install a USB port or three to power then all.

Not interested in just using Ipads, the kids have them already....just want info on the question i asked about thanks. Last dvd players got used heaps on the various trips we have done over the years (Cape York, Simpson Desert, The Gulf, etc etc), they may not be for everyone, but i've travelled enough of this country with my family to know what works for us and know they get used heaps even though the kids have Ipads already, so want to install these in my vehicle again  :cheers:

I looked at the headrest DVD players from Autobahn. Looked good, similar in leather look to the original seats, wireless headphones and allowed the kids to attach their own thumb drives if needed. The big issue though is that it needed a HDMI cable input for the thumb drive, not sure why!?

I did look into putting Headrest DVD players in, but went with the wireless hard drive.

I'm not saying that what I did is what you should do! Each to their own.

Im replacing mine shortly also, so far my very limited research has me heading toward Mongoose with 9" screens, not cheap, but pretty decent quality...I have 7" screens at present, 1 of which stopped working recently...

If you've had them before then you would be aware they cop and flogging when your 4wdriving, I don't ever use them in this situation, but the bouncing and rough stuff surely wouldn't be doing them much good.

When mine were first fitted they didn't sit to well on the sleaves on the seat, so I fiddled a bit and also locktighted the screw in sections to help reduce it coming undone etc..

I have Mongoose ones in mine.

2 tips.

Hard wire them with a dedicated on off switch. This way, if you pull up to a servo to fill up, they will remain on when you turn the ignition off.

And if they are naughty, you can turn them off.

I looked at doing this a while back. The guys at jbhifi and autobahn both said to not bother with DVD players and to use iPads or samsungs.  Jbhifi used to sell them but they stopped because they had so many come back under warranty. In the end I bought 2 10 inch Samsung tablets. They are so easy to use compared to the DVD players I don't know why you don't want to use them. It's dead simple to copy a bunch of movies on them and not have to worry about discs. However if you insist on using DVD headrest's then eBay is probably your best bet. Do some research as not al brands are created equal.

We've got a portable DVD player in a case the wraps around the headrest. Gets about 2 DVDs out of a charge/battery. Best part is we can move it from car to car easily, and if we go somewhere we can take it out of the car and he can watch wherever he wants.

A few replies to the posts above thus far....
We are looking at getting 9" screens ourselves, so not wanting a 7" screen...but cheers for the idea anyhow. Also, I never said we won't use the IPads the kids already own, they get used just as much as the DVD players I already had in my previous vehicle did. We have heaps of DVDs the kids love watching, so I will install these and know they'll get used just as much as a tablet does. . Still have the 2 portable DVD players I could hang from the back seat if I wanted to, but I want a neater look in this new fourby.

The benefit of fixed DVD headrests is that it limits the viewing time to when the family is driving. Leave the iPads at home and the kids have to wait till you're driving to watch their movies, and find something non-electronic to do when you're stopped.

iPads etc are great for many reasons like the portability, long battery life, storage etc but the issue is that the kids (2-5 year range) can and will nag you for them at anytime and then muck up if they don't get their way. Any parent knows the rules with iPads and kids that age are easy to make but difficult to enforce.

My guess is Rumpig wants to leave the iPads at home to remove the temptation but still give the kids something to occupy/reward/distract when driving.

I got mine from an ebay seller called Xtrons before doing a trip to the snow from BNE - were awesome, best thing is the wireless headphones.  The ones we got were some of the cheaper ones that they sell but still seem pretty reasonable quality and straight forward to install once you have run some power to the rear. Kids can either watch the same thing or 2 different things as there is a player in both head rests plus they come with some built in basic games. I installed a switch up front so I can cut power if we dont want them watching them or if there is any shenanigans going in the back.

the DVD players I had in the last vehicle always stayed in it, so yeah I do limit the time they watched it to being whilst driving. I am happy for the kids to play on their IPads for a half hour in the camper before they go to bed, but yes once at camp the day time is for running around playing, not being glued onto a screen.

not interested thanks, after a cleaner look then having them hang from the back of the seat. Can easily hang these ones I have on the seats if I wanted to, but I don't like that look. Previous vehicle I had no choice due to seats fitted in it, this time I can change the headrests in it and have wires running anywhere visible.

I have a set fitted to my vehicle good for what they are.

9" off ebay and fitted them myself, its not hard over an afternoon- I can help- provide pointers.....

Was told 5 years ago when I bought mine (yes they are that old and still going well) to make sure that you get sony lasers.

now I don't know if that still applies but that was my search criteria

bloody hell these are now touch screen.....

I wanted to get 32gb card and have them in the DVD player with preloaded movies but they couldn't handle cards that big, no doubt that has changed.

note a couple of things that may come in handy to know in you search after owning these things.

USB don't seem to want to charge ipads- that would be super handy as the kids always have these things as well
make sure that the price includes headphones
would be nice for a "normal" 3.5mm headphone jack as the IR headphones use heaps of power and the speakers are annoying if not individualised or mixing with what you are watching in the front and the kids have normal headphones for their ipads.....

Hey champ we've had them for a few years now and it's probably the best thing I've bought. Mine have a zip up lid which drops down when unzipped and are grey vinyl looking matching my cruiser interior. You can watch seperate movies or watch the same thing. Kids absolutely love them. Before we go away on a trip the kids organise their movies and the mrs and i don't stress. Use the fold up ir headphones that store away easily. Don't fuss over usb and all that crap just let the kids entertain themselves when they want. Got them in Sydney from St Mary's Audio.

A good thing about headrest DVD players for my kids is that one of them gets travel sick looking down at tablets, books etc and the DVD players on the headrest keeps their eyes up.

Not into all the tech stuff myself, I don't even have bugger all music on my phone let alone ripping dvd's onto stuff for the kids. To be honest, i haven't even started looking for actual units to buy yet, so not finding anything difficult as far as finding stuff goes....thought i'd ask the question first about what's out there now before i bother to look myself. We bought a pair of these about a month ago.  Part of Christmas presents for the boys.  Have hooked them up to try out and seem ok.  Got them when there was a further 15% off Ebay site wide.

Those look the same as the one I have in my vehicle
Basic and have those problems I listed above

But cannot complain as they are still going strong after 5 years,  great at doing the basic DVD player role
