60 years ago, two men took on the challenge of riding motorcycles around the continent as a reliability trial called Transmatilda. It was a time when only 10 per cent of Australia's country roads were sealed. And now that epic journey is being re-enacted. Mike Sexton reports.

There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.
