Camping at the beach SE Qld with large group - questions
« on: October 13, 2015, 11:33:42 AM »
Hi Guys,

Some of you may know that I am a school teacher - as part of the curriculum; my senior English class is looking at travel. The kids have asked me if it is possible to go camping as part of their class.
Surprisingly enough, of course I am keen!!!

Question time!

Are there any suggestions for cheap camping sites near the beach for a group of bush school kids - Hervey Bay and Elliot Heads are popular choices however the cost may exclude them.
Keeping in mind bus costs and food also need to be purchased.

I am keen on Elliot Heads due to the Surf Life Saving aspect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The kids will be tent camping - preferably with access to shower/toilets.

 ;D

woodgate's a very nice spot and a caravan park that's directly opposite the beach and a very quite area
or burrum heads just north of hervey bay

haven't stayed at burrum and not sure if you would get a bus into the national park
but woodgate caravan park easy access and heaps of room down the back for camping

My suggestions where you can get a bus and have toilets are

Inskip point at Rainbow Beach
Cotton Tree Caravan park at Maroochydore
Camp ground on Teewah Beach near Double Island.
Camp ground at 1770
Camp ground just north on Bundaberg which is also on the beach

I'd look into Bargara Beach. It has unpowered paddock type camping areas, a large camp kitchen, good amenities and patrolled beach.

There's a walking track to Mon Repos beach and you could possibly swing a deal with who ever runs the turtle thing there to do something for the kids?

99% of the time the beach is gentle and would generally be kind to not so strong swimmers. Without generalising the kids, I'd imagine they are not strong surf swimmers if they are from the bush? If that's the case, I'd disregard Elliot Heads.

Shane.

With enough horse power, sheer ignorance and a total lack of respect for your vehicle, you'll get through....

I often ride my bike past this place when up at our Sunny Coast place, looks like they have a bit of fun  there.

We have previously stayed at Moore Park (nth of Bundy) caravan park previously as it was right on the beach and out of the way of a lot of the ratbag element that seems to gravitate to Bargara and some of the others.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with the kids when you are there

Good luck with it

Thanks everyone - there are some great ideas here. I will start contacting the ones listed above for prices etc.

I love camping - camping with 20 or so 16 and 17 yos could be a whole other experience!!

I'm assuming that you'd be going midweek in a school term. If so I think you'll only find lifeguards on duty on the Sunny Coast????? Might pay to check with relevant councils??
I would say this would be a must for your OH & S plan for trip, unless you're providing qualified water safety officers.

Elliott heads will be much safer than you think as long as you go to the beach and NOT the river mouth a lot of people go to the river and don't even know the beach is there.

rockinj if you want I can give you a contact number for the surf club to talk to them

lol, Do I need more?

I am surprised at the enthusiasm of some of the kids, others are horrified at the thought of actually getting dirty lol.

Thanks for all your replies, this has ended up being a 'no go' due to school 'stuff'. At the moment, I can't say I am disappointed, I can concentrate on a family camp at Elliot Heads a few days before Chrissy instead.
