Anyone own a beater car?

If so how old are they and what are they worth nowadays?

There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

Bought a brand new Hyundai I30 a couple of years ago, never intended for it to be this way but it is starting to turn into a bit of a beater; if it can last out to the ten years mark then it will get handed over to the kids to learn in and the missus can have a new car. If it doesn't last to the ten year mark then she'd better dust off the deadly treadly cause she aint getting her hands on my 'troll  8)

Bought a repairable write-off Mazda 3 after the last big Brissy hail storm.
All up costs including reregistering etc was a bit under 30% of comparable undamaged  vehicles.
It sits at the train station 5 days a week and is a lot cheaper to run than the V6 Prado when zipping around doing chores on the weekend.

And to answer your question its a 2005 Mazda 3, cost me onroad a tick under $3k and will never be worth anything due to the hail damage. Will be the lads learner car in a few years and will definitely get our moneys worth from it.

Four and half years ago, i bought an 88 XF Panel van for $500.00

Recon engine and box a few years earlier, receipts for a power steering rebuild etc etc in the glovebox.
Every bush or part known to mankind had been done on it by the previous owner.
Very tidy white paint, radio, auto, air cond and p. steering with 7 months rego.

Was told by the owner, the LPG tank needed recertification for a RWC.

Got a bloke out to do the test etc to be told the tank had 8 years to go.
It had been done 2 years earlier when the gas mixer was replaced.

Its been used for a tradie van ever since and is looking good at 20/20.

20 feet or 20 kph, looks mint.....  ;D

I took it yesterday out to our other place in the Lockyer Valley, 672klm round trip, good as gold. (Done several times now)

Runs sweet on fuel or LPG too.

Drives pretty good too and is about to roll over 700,000 soon.
