Availability of firewood.
« on: May 09, 2016, 10:19:41 AM »
HI
Heading out to Cameron Cnr ,Birdsville for the Big Red Bash then east ending up on the coast then back home Sydney.
We love our fires and this is the longest time away that we have travelled.
What is the availability of wood suitable for firepits along the way. I certainly don't want to carry loads of wood.
I guess this is a rookie question but you guys have the knowledge.
Jeff

We found plenty around the river beds.

Edit: Chainsaw is a must. We found some solid malga wood that killed a new chain in record time. No dirt hitting or hollow that would kill a chain.

That's good I guess ,might have to get a chainsaw. I was hoping a bush saw would be ok.

We got by without a chainsaw.
If we saw some decent wood we'd grab it. Whether we just broke camp and still had 100's of k's to go, or along the journey stop and get it.
If you wait till you get close to the next camp Murphys law will kick in for sure.

Also heading to to Big Red Bash, going home via Cameron's Corner. My first big trip, perhaps we should start a Bash thread, then we can catch up in Birdsville

I saw on Facebook there will be someone selling firewood (and ice) at the bash. Which could be a good, but expensive option.
I imagine firewood out there would be hard to come by at the best of times, and with 6000 campers all looking to for it it's going to be pretty scarce.

I'm signed up to be a volunteer out there, looking forward to the trip but geez its sneaking up fast!
