What is it with truckies, 4wders and anyone else with a UHF think its ok to continually swear there head off all the time. They dead set sound like a bunch of animals. I now don't have it on too much when the kids are in the vehicle due to these foul mouthed fools...It's not a private conversation and everyone else does not need to hear the crap, especially children.

So I agree that the UHF is a disgrace. Never use it near a city.

Pretty much have it turned off now......Really pisses me off....Sorry for rant...... >:( >:( >:( >:(

But apparently you think it is ok for YOU to swear in a public forum....

Couldn't agree more Teabag.

The UHF in our car is the most over-rated and underused piece of equipment I own. It's never switched on, for these very reasons. A while ago I was tempted to upgrade to a new 80-ch unit, but decided there was very little point - I'd rather spend the money on something that I'll use when out and about.

Cheers!

Why do you have to talk in code ??? Can you not say 'Police, copper, cop, radar' etc ??? What's with 'flash for cash, Evil Knieval' etc ???

And why does the same dickhead ask for a radio check, the same time EVERY FKN MORNING ! YES IT'S WORKING !!! It worked yesterday, the day before, the one before that and I'm pretty damn sure it'll work again tomorrow!

Agree, once you're past the Big Fish heading north, it's pretty good. South of that though  ::)

I have never turned the radio on in the truck. I get sick of hearing the crap. The ones in the utes get a run on Myswag trips and that is about it. Would be nice if they got used properly but when a spanner starts going on about how he got cut off I always want to get on and say "let he who is free from sin cast the first stone" but I also don't like to fuel the spanners...

In the truck - I don't really need to know where the cops are or if the weigh bridges are open because I do my best not to break the law. So I can run with the radio off and not put up with them!!

We just bought one as everyone says it is a 'must' when travelling, we have children and feel the language is disrespectful so will not have it on with them in the car. waste of money might as well chuck it out :(

We often don't turn it on until out of town, and then leave it on either 40 or 29 depending on where we are.  Most of the time it is quiet, except for advice about police locations.  When there is an accident or wide load approaching it is brilliant for knowing what is going on. We also talk to the truckies about when it is clear to overtake etc.   Poor language is not the norm, unless you are in the city.

Try it again, when you are well out of the city.

Used to need channel 40 when I was operating road trains over the west and b doubles over here in the east. Really had to have one to call up in the high risk spots, i.e narrow bridges etc. But I always turned it off coming into a city. Syd Melb Adel and Bris all had their fair share of @#€& wits. Being out of the industry for a number of years now, I avoid 40 like the plague. Love the extra 40 chanels cause there's a better chance of finding a quiet one.

Have just completed 10000K;s across VIC, SA, WA, NSW & NT doing the Beadell highways
and others. During that time the CB was used constantly on channel 40 by the convoy.

Most travel was done on remote tracks but a fair amount was also done on the bitumen,
the CB was used on tracks to warn of track conditions and to keep track of the convoy,
constant chatter also gave oncoming vehicles a warning that others were approaching.

On bitumen CB was used to warn of oncoming traffic when overtaking semi's and to arrange
passing or overtaking manovers with truck drivers etc and as some of the convoy were towing
campers our convoy was generally traveling well below the speed limit so semi drivers did appreciate
us allowing them to pass easily and we found them all to be polite and helpful on this trip. Even the local
police came on a couple of times when we chattering trying to find unmarked tracks and told us where they were.

To my amazement during that time we only encountered one case of swearing and that was not far out of
Melbourne on the way home at which point the CB was switched off! In a lot of instances the co drivers were
handling the CB to allow drivers to focus on the driving and maybe the females handling the mike moderated
the language of some?

Cheers

Has anyone tried using the CTCSS functionality or the digital equivalent in a convoy / road trip ?

I've often thought it would be a good way to avoid inputs from outside your group but haven't had time to set it up before.

Hi,
We use it on our 2 small 1W hand held units, it works well.
Got caught though trying to call SWMBO from the truck 5W unit, she couldn't hear a thing. I could hear her though.

The 1W units get used in towns if we need to go to different shops. It avoids getting all the other transmissions going on inthe area.
Cheers

At times it is better not to use this function as others listening may want to warn you
of up coming danger etc.

Good point. But if uninterrupted chat is what you want, it is perfect.

Having said that, you can turn it on on individual channels and scan to 40 as an example to monitor both if you were concerned about general warnings.

earlier this year I took a group of friends to Albany WA from Sydney, via Maralinga, and mainly used CH18 to monitor the masses of caravans. Some farms use the same channel and we heard some funny messages between the missus in the house and hubby working around the paddocks. As I was always in front I switched to CH40 to have a chat to the trucks and ask if it was OK for our group to go round, or call them around. The worst language I have regularly heard is from younger people in towns who use the UHF instead of a mobile phone. And a section of the 4wd community who have never learnt to speak without swearing. There are plenty about.
