Had a search and no threads with the info I want.


Trying to find out if this stuff would be good for under a tent, eg: would water pool on it, or go through it easily? Cant find any good photos of it on interwebs either...

Yes CGear is the bee's penis, but its 125x the price, and this is for occasional use (2-4 times a yr) with a tent :)

I'm pretty sure this is what we got.  It is like shadecloth so water goes straight through it, so does sand so we found it quite good to stop tracking dirt and sand into the camper.

I haven't searched, but for sure it has been discussed in one of those threads were C-gear is mentioned. It will be as good as shade cloth and possibly better because of the closer weave.

I'm also not 100% that it's the stuff we've got, but the name looks very familiar. Mine is also green with black edging and brass eyelets (although not shown in your photo).  Got mine from Anaconda years ago, bought the biggest size possible as at the time we had a 3 room tent...

Anyway if it is the same one, then I'd go for that as that's what we now use under the CT tent floor (doubled over cos it's too big).  Water passes easy and if it gets muddy, it dries pretty quick and shakes off.

Hi - we use the exact same ones.  One under the tent, and one out the front under the tarp.  These are great - during heavy rain the water pools for a short time as the mesh acts like a giant sieve, but then drains through quite quickly.  As others mentioned, is great for reducing the amount of sand and dirt etc tracked into the tent.  You can also sweep it quite easily to remove any leaves, bark etc after a storm.

I think BCF have them, if not very similar. They where reasonably priced, with a good range of sizes.

I've got 2 - use one for under the tent & another for the annex. Never had any problems however as Sullyman said, the water will pool for a short time before seeping through. Whilst I like the Cgear, I could not justify the price difference

Another happy owner of the OZtrail stuff. Cgear may shed sand better (I don't know) but we give our OZtrail stuff a sweep every once in a while. Began with one, now have four. Also we don't feel bad about hammering spikes through it when we're covering acreage and the awning pegs fall where they fall... Might not have been so happy to do that if they cost a lot, but they didn't and the pegs don't seem to cause significant permanent harm anyway.

I am thinking that I will buy 2 of the 8 x 12 Ultramesh tarps to use as a floor cover, or annex wall or shade cloth on the kitchen side of my jayco.


For one of them, I wanted to sew velcro tape onto one of the long sides. I thinking that would be an easy way to connect to the awning for when I wanted to use them as a wall on my awning.

Has anyone tried sewing velcro tape on these using a domestic sewing machine? 

I read that tarps can be tricky to sew with but a figure a shade cloth style might be a bit easier to sew.

For the second ultramesh tarp, I would love to have the ability to connect to 6mm sail track on the  kitchen side of my jayco. This will  provide some more shady living spage. Given it ain't waterproof I was thinking of using sail slugs to connect the eyelets to the sail track.  It seems to be hard to find length of Keder or sail rope to connect to the sail track. I can always add more eyelets and slugs.

I may even buy 1 ultramesh tarp for floor and wall, and one ultra rig tarp. Mainly cause I am hoping that the 5mm cord on the edge of the ultra rig tarp will slide into the 6mm sail track.

I have a soft floor with a 10 foot side fold tent and after some advice from another myswagger (Pete_R) I bought one of these Ultramesh tarps on ebay to put under the soft floor.  My trailer came with a annexe floor (similar shade cloth stuff) but I wanted something specifically for under the tent floor for some proection and keep the underfloor a bit cleaner to help with the pack up.

I ended up buying a 10ft x 16ft (as opposed to 10x10) and I have the 6ft sticking out wher the entrance door is, so for a quick one night stop there is still a big door mat so to speak.  And when I do use the annexe floor I have this same 6 foot underneath the annex floor for a bit of double up at the entrance door to the tent.   Have only used once and it will get another run at Easter. 

I think the ultramesh stuff does the job and is reasonably priced, particularly if it just being used as a type of ground sheet.

Agreed, for under a tent, it's fantastic. We have a few different ones for different tents/the camper, and they're good. Last well, too. The oldest one we have is starting to go a bit powdery in spots, but seems to still be holding together. This is the one that goes under the touring tent, and the end sticks out under the awning another 3 feet. I think it's this sun exposure that has caused it to degrade. Keep in mind, this particular sheet will be 6+ years old.

Where it does fall down though (and where I am led to believe the cGear stuff is better) is for walking on. I find the Ultramesh very very slippery to walk on, especially if it's wet. Hence, it wouldn't be my first choice for matting in the annex area. Also, gets hot in the sun (being dark green).

But as a ground sheet under a tent, I still don't think you can do much better. Cheap, good, effective - pick any three.

Depends on soft or hard floor, whichever I go for. Hardfloor will need only one and soft probably two, one for under the awning and one for the family room.

Actually the Ultramesh are pretty cheap considering they're edged and have eyelets. I've had plain shadecloth from Bunnos and prefer the Ultramesh.
