Cheapest Satphone/GPS Emergency option?

It's not a Sat phone but does have SMS messaging,2 way communication GPS tacking etc, -- I had my eye on a inReach Explorer for some time

The plans seem to be reasonable

I think read somewhere that you can just stop and start the plan when you like  --  not sure.

Anyone else had experience with the InReach product and their plans?

True, providing you have piece of mind to grab the phone before exiting the vehicle
but then that applies to the others as well.

Best of all is don't travel alone, if going somewhere your unlikely to encounter
others for long periods.

I run an epirb, if you choose an epirb get the one with GPS chip.

There is one huge advantage the sat phone has over the HF.   You'll discover it when your car catches fire.

so what do you grab?
HF in Backpack or water - can't carry both...

I believe they are small enough to fit in a pocket  --   Probably just attach to windscreen until ready for waking and take with you.

Once again has anyone used one? for messaging or in their travels?

Our 4wd club had it's own iridium sat phone,we carried it across the Anne Beadell hwy with us.
We used the SIM card from the wife's Samsung phone with a sim adaptor, worked first go no dramas, just turn it on and it locks onto a satellite and it's ready to use.
I will look at buy my own in the future, it's the best way to go and so cheap.

I use a Spot Gen3 so SWIMBO can keep an eye on where I am when I go for a ride. Helps put her mind at ease if she can just click on a link and check that I'm still moving.

It's programmed to send a specific message via text and email when I hit the button, but is also continuously updating my current location (mine is currently set to ping my location at 5 minute intervals), and it's GPS based, so it works when not in mobile phone range.

Hi Paul .We have a PLB  ,it's no bigger than a pack of smokes ,has built in GPS  got it from Smiths Marine in VIC came with first aid kit plus a survival kit at no extra cost found them on ebay

I have heard about an app - emergency +.
Apparently uses satelite for coverage in emergency situations.

Started looking today at options. Decided on the inReach, saw it at The Electric Bug in Adelaide for $500. Started looking online and found it for $400, available at Dick Smith for this. Looked at the Dick Smith site and they have them on a 24hr special for $335 including postage. Ordered one.
