Being ex Army and somewhat interested in Australia's history, I found it a bit strange that yesterdays mail had a limited offer to purchase a $10 Silver coin celebrating 100 years of Gallipoli and that sales were through the Macquarie Mint.
There is only a limited number of these coins available, and sounded like a half decent purchase.
Reading the little brochure, it was made clear that this coin is not Australian, it is currency from the country of Kiribati.
Now I don't know many Kiribatians (or whatever they are called) and don't recall seeing the name on uniforms at the Olympics so I had to Google it.
This Kiribati is tiny country comprised of 21 islands and has a population a bit over 100 000, and is one of the poorest countries in the world. The indigenous language is Gilbertese.
I have no intention of buying one of these celebratory coins even with free postage and a certificate of authenticity, but if anyone is interested you can go to this website:
https://www.macquariemint.com/10-for-10-Gallipoli-Silver-Coin-2015/62/offer.aspxI don't know if this is a con/scam or even if any money gets passed onto the Government of Kiribati who sound like they need it, but this could be the offer of a lifetime.
Cheers
Ian
