Preparing for the red center
« on: March 31, 2015, 10:42:25 PM »
Hey fellas
I've been reading heaps of camper builds and impressed with a lot of the awesome ideas.
The wife and I are planning a trip for mid next year from Brisbane to the Ayers rock. We are now looking for a decent camper that will take us there and back without too many issues. I've been looking at second hand Aussie campers but I'm also playing with the idea of getting a trailer custom made. Possibly a new version of something like this. Has anyone made/bought something like this?

Thanks for your help in advance

Welcome Roughing It,

You may need a true offroad CT if you are taking the Plenty to Ayers Rock from Brissie.
We have done a fair bit of research on this as we are doing the same trip the last week in August this year.
Seems there is 800K's of rough roads if you go that way.
Depending on your Budget there are always some good Aussie bargains in the for sale section here and Gumtree.
Good luck and have a great trip.

Mate we bought a 1999 Outback (offroad version) for very little money and spent almost as much again fitting solar, battery and electrics, LEDs, new kitchen, new mattress, carpet, drawers, bike racks - in fact everything you could want (the unit was basic but in good condition). Still no more expensive than the cheap imports but it has a reputation that they will never match. OK, the design hasn't been altered very much over 25 years but that kinda proves how good it was in the first place. Look around - you'll get a similar deal easier than you think - and it's not much work to end up with a near-perfect performer. Even the guys who can afford $30,000 brand new units salivate over what mods they are going to do!

We did that trip, and more, last year and the Plenty was in pretty good condition. Bit corrugated in places but not what I would call rough.

I was looking at ecomate, do you reckon those forward folding campers will last on the corrugated roads? The budget is around 10k to 20k absolute max. Depends on what I'm getting really, don't mind spending a little more for quality

G'day and welcome to myswag.

One person's intrepretation of what is a rough road, may not necessarily be the same as anothers, or yours.  And remember, outback roads can change from one week to the next depending on the weather.  It is best to prepare for the worst.

Good luck in your CT choice.

Happy camping

There is plenty of great advice on this site.

One big tip of many..................if you are on the move each day like we generally are when touring, find a camper that is easy and not time consuming to pack and unpack, otherwise a nice holiday can become unpleasant very quickly

And Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
