Plumos fire pit issues
« on: September 06, 2015, 01:27:00 PM »
We used our Plumos fire pit for the first time while away recently. To our dismay the sides have buckled from the heat and it requires a hammer to dismantle in the morning.
Anyone else have this problem with theirs.
Ours is the large size and the buckle along the long side is about 10mm.

Haven't seen these before and, checking them out,  just noticed this on their website.

"Plumos fire pits are designed to contain a moderate fire. Do not overload the fire pit. To build a coal bed for cooking, start with a moderate fire and gradually add more firewood as the fire burns down rather than building a large fire and waiting for the fire to burn down. This allows for more control over heat, builds a coal bed faster and is safer to manage.
Can I use heat beads or brickettes in a Plumos?
Heat Beads and Brickettes tend to burn significantly hotter than firewood which can lead to damage of the walls if left to burn too hot for too long, we recommend using only firewood for this reason. If you must use heat beads we advise building a coal bed from firewood first then use heat beads in addition to maintain heat for cooking."

With 3mm mild steel plate, maybe your fire was too hot for the unit? Just guessing.

Mine buckled as well on both sides the first time I used it. Mine is the medium size. I can still get it apart though fairly easily. I haven't bothered doing anything about it.

I wouldn't say my fire was extreme just normal with no beads etc. It hasn't got any worse the 5 or so times I have used it since.

Can't help with your question.

If you are looking for something better take a look at the Snow Peak fire pits from Drifta. We have one and is is brilliant.

Thanks for the replies.
I have contacted Plumos and he is going to send two new sides. Not sure how this will stop it happening again.
Plumos doe not recommend heat beads. I was only using timber anyway.
If it happens again, I will ask for a refund.
