I just wanted to share a thought on the GoPro. I bought my Hero3 silver from an ebayer just over a year ago. Its bloody great and with the aerial footage and also some free diving we've used it heaps and couldn't be happier.

But..... there's always a 'but'.... I recently went to upgrade the software and the GoPro site requested the serial number located inside the battery case.... I couldn't find one...much looking later..... I find that factory seconds are being sold without serial numbers... yep, I got mine cheap(ish).

This means that technically I cant upgrade to new software, thats ok if yours is working ok, but not so if the software is your problem... bloody scammers.

After a bit of searching (this problem is not uncommon) I found a way of getting around it but, bloody hell.....

So when you receive your new GoPro, open the battery case and check that it has a serial number sticker, record that number somewhere safe (its only a sticker and can come off).

Bloody scammers.....

Mine works fine and has had some amazingly poor treatment (dropping with a quadcopter from 50m high and no damage with no case). I wonder how I would have gotten on had I needed a warranty claim????? I got lucky.....

Moral of the story? I dunno...maybe pay the few bob extra and buy the thing locally, if its not right its then their problem.... so don't be a tight arse (like me) and get what you pay for????

My understanding is that they all come in a waterproof housing.

I have a 3Sixt without wifi and it isn't bad for $49, but it definately isn't a Gopro.

They come with a standard housing which is rated waterproof to 40m/ optional Dive housing is rated 60m

Whatever you get, get a model with wifi - I've got the older Hero2 and bought the optional wifi bac pac (last one in Sydney it seems) and its made videoing so much easier as it can all be done from the iPhone, and you can actually see what you are about to film.

You don't need to pay the extra coin and get the wifi bac pac..Just down load the GoPro app which is free and it does the same thing..

Yeah. My hero 2 doesn't have the wifi built in. It only came out with hero 3. I think the "hero" model only requires it now.  Which is why I had to get the bacpac

I think the hero model is the old hero2 repackaged. But am not 100% without checking specs

You need the wifi to talk to the app. Without wifi the app is useless

the Hero 2's didn't come with wifi built in... that's why he would have had to but the wifi bacpac.

That said, the wifi chews the batteries something shocking. I prefer not to use it, and cut the first and last second of the video (pushing the button rattle) in post.

Has anyone used after market batteries and/or chargers for their Gopro?  $50 for a genuine seems a bit pricey when ebay have them as less than $20
