RAKE AND BEARING SERVICE PRICES

Hi all,

Took our new to us 2003 Kakadu to get a wheel bearing repack and brake service today. Took it to a well known camper mechanic in Adelaide.
Was quoted aprox $310.00 at first but when they rang to say its ready it has blown out to $360.00
Does that sound right or is it a bit expensive?
I would have thought that a bearing repack should not take any longer than about an hour to hour and half each side.
Some grease and a couple of seals add about $50-60
Just wondered what is a fair price?

Anyhow, on a brighter note, we went to Beachport for the long weekend. Three night familiarisation trip.
Little bit of drizzle but no leaks. All seems OK but will take a bit of getting used too it.

Still trying to work out how to post piccies.

Seems high for a std re-pack & brake adjustment?
Maybe they installed  new bearings & brake shoes??

is a bit out there did you get an itemised invoice - should only be about 1-1/2 hr labour max

Over heads, over heads, over heads, they work on approx $150+ per hour plus the cost of parts.

I have found a mobile guy that services campers/caravans for $70 per hour plus parts, however he does have a call out fee but is wavered if you have a full mechanical service done. Full service is $245 for a pop top camper.

From memory Jayco wanted $360 as of 2015 for a full inspection and report for our Jayco Finch Outback. No repairs or parts included.

Maybe you're close to right with your estimation?  Workshops can be from $90 to $130 per hour.  Say 1.5 hours per side as you said at $100ph and $60 for parts and sundries. 

What type of brake and bearing setup do you have?  12 inch brakes and parallel or 2 ton bearing parts would cost more than the common 10 inch brake, Ford SL setup.

What exactly did they do for the brake service?  Check and adjust.  New linings/pads.  Machining.

OK,  picked her up this afternoon and was given an invoice with the following items,

1. Single axle brake and bearing service including removing, cleaning, inspecting and repacking all wheel bearings.                           
    Check brakes and adjust if necessary.
    Blacken tyres, check tyre pressures, check wheel nuts, visual check shackles for wear and check u bolts ae tight.
    Check 12V exterior lights                                                                                                                                                         $268.18   

   
2.  Off-road surcharge - single axle                                                                                                                                             $40.91


3.  Grease, pins, recyclables, enviromental levies, emery, misc.  etc.                                                                                          $25.00

                                                                                                                                                                                 subtotal      $334.09
                                                                                                                                                                                        GST      $ 33.41
                                                                                                                     
                                                                                                                                                                                      Total      $367.50


   No new parts were used, not even new seals.   I just feel ripped off and when I asked him how they worked this price out he just said that was the price for the job as a whole. It takes about 3-4 hours. Sounds like bu@#%^&t to me.

  I wish I had aproached things differentley on the phone when booking in instead of just accepting what they said as being the norm. I don't think I'll be going back there again.

what on earth is an offroad surcharge…… sounds like a crock of s*&t, regardless if it was a patrol or a commodore we charged the same to do wheel bearings

That's one reason to do it yourself....and even if you know nothing about that sort of thing...U tube will soon have you heading in the right direction..

Motor dealers still charge approx $80/hr, I don't see why a mechanic would charge that much more ??...1 hr each side max...but they aren't specifying a time, just a package price..

Go elsewhere !!

I've repacked a Shitload of wheel bearings in fact I did it multiple times a day everyday for years and it takes more time to take the wheels and hubs off than to service the bearings if you've got all the gear.
As for checking wheel nuts and all the other bollocks that's just crap.

Time to befreind a mechanic Wooly, ask if you could spend a bit of your free time as a rouse about so as he could guide you with a bit of learing a few basics in return .. Other than that the local tool shop,  Grandpa Google and U-tube are your freinds ..

You were obv happy with this or you would not have taken it in . So at $310 everyone was happy.

If that's his price that's his price .. He obv did not build a reputation by doing cheap half arsed jobs.
1 bloke for 3 hrs ther is your $310.

The addition of the extra charges with no parts having been used is not on  >:D it looks like a stitch up .. I would have asked for an explanation of the extra above $310.

If I give a price and it has to change then I call customer and clearly indicate why .

He may have built a good rep but keeping one is harder than getting one .
Without the use of any extra parts I would have only paid the $310.its the principle of the matter , I have found no body begrudges paying for a good job but no body inc me like to be stitched up.

Because 4wd tyres use allot more compressed air when checking pressures, not to mention the extra tyre black required.... ;D
