Now that the carriers are rolling out LTE in the 700Mhz spectrum i would buy a device that can tune to 700Mhz as the signal can go greater distances than the existing LTE bands.
The following devices can use the 700MHz spectrum. The latest Netgear can do carrier aggregation so up to 300Mbit/s, still a bit pricy though.
These are Mifi units so create a wifi hotspot so you can connect multiple devices. Most can take an external antenna also to improve coverage.

ZTE MF910
Netgear 785S (marketed as the Telstra Prepaid 4G My Pocket Wifi Ultimate
But there is now an even newer model Netgear but a bit more pricy.

Just wondering about matching this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNLOCKED-4G-PREPAID-WIFI-BROADBAND-MODEM-HUAWEI-E5372T-/171389084598?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item27e795e3b6
with this antenna set-up http://www.telcoantennas.com.au/site/7m-telescopic-pole-antenna-65dbi
just how well do you think it would work   ??? ??? ;D ;D

I'm sure it's going to work fine buddy, I'd probably want to have a look at the extension pole just to see how bulky it is before I bought it.  Before ordering it give the guys at Telco a call and discuss, they know there stuff.

As Wortho pointed out, if you're not in a hurry I'd wait for a bit and see what comes out for Telstra's new 4Gx (700MHz) network, it's lower frequency should really suit camping applications.  It only launched late last year so not many antennas have popped up for it yet.

When a decent Omni (aka stick antenna) comes out I'm going to upgrade to it and a new Telstra modem (I like the Telstra Mobile Wi-Fi 4G Advanced Pro X - Huawei E5786)

I haven't used one of those modem as they've only just came out but in theory they are best on offer from Telstra at the moment.

I just use an aluminium painters extension pole, about $20 from bunnings. Do consider the length of the pole because a longer pole means more cable.  Every extra bit of cable chews up a little dB, I have 6m of 5mm LMR195 low loss cable which theoretically looses about 0.32dB/m on next G so just under 2dB in total therefore my 6.5dB antenna is really only good for 4.5dB.

Just to add to this don't forget that by lifting your antenna up higher you will be probably "gaining" more than your lost 2db by being able to get a better signal.

Hey Speedcom, I'm no radio expert but LOS on these Omni high gain antennas seems a little less important hence I think it's a bit of a balancing act with height against cable length/loss, especially when you push up to 4G 1800 because the dB loss nearly doubles.  My particular antenna drops back to 3dB gain on the current Telstra 4G which is pretty much equal to the expected loss, therefore the only real benefit I get is the elevation and getting the signal from outside the structure of the camper.  I assume if I made the cable longer signal would degrade.

I think if you wanted to get some serious height you might be better running a wireless repeater system, I've toyed with the idea of making one of these, I was thinking with a slingshot and some fishing line I could install a repeater high in a tree but still within wifi range. I've worked out how I would do it but I just haven't got the motivation yet.

Im using the same setup as Jasman with a Dovado and Telstra 4G USB card.

Problem I have is the crap connection port on the USB card where the aerial goes in - its far from stable. Any solutions....?
