I think the old argument about petrols being too expensive to run is a thing of the past. I know the 100s and 200s Cruza V8 has plenty of power and returns respectable economy for vehicle just shy of 3 tonne. (The old Toyota  6 cyl petrol is very thirsty though).

I would consider a petrol Pajero or Prado or Cruza. plenty of owners on this forum that could tell you their fuel economy.

Generally agree and certainly with Dazzler on the V6 Playdoe. But the V6 Paj is a pretty ordinary ride IMO. I went and drove one ready to buy and walked away. The diesel is sooo much better other than noise. Pretty much why MM ditched the V6 and they are all now diesel only.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Yep.  The petrol is god awful...

My alternative to cheap import trailers;

I've got an 09 Pajero with the 3.2DiD, currently has 198,000km and has been fantastic for touring. Rock hopping look elsewhere...

Fuel economy when towing was around the 12L/100km, empty it averages between 8.5-10L/100km

I'm on my 2nd Pajero. As suggested by eman, they are great tourers (and in sand) but others are best suited for rock hopping.

My '09 NT also gets similar fuel consumption as reported by eman (auto diesel).

I'd recomend getting an NT ('09+) or newer. They have substantially more power & torque (like 20% more), a much better auto, and highter tow rating compared to the older models.

Just be aware, Pajeros have a lower ball weight limit compared to other brands.

If buying second hand, make sure you have a real good look underneath.

One major flaw on the Pajero is the underbody protection. They are only protected by flimsy plastic/metal.

I am getting Bushskinz for mine.

They are a great car though - I love my Pajero and glad I bought it. Was also looking at a Prado (too much like driving a car) and a Patrol (too rough for city driving) - the Pajero was a great compromise for both and great value for money.

The late model turbo diesel pajero intercooler is very susceptible to damage from rocks. If you only ever drive sand and graded dirt you *might* be ok with the  factory bash plate.  Highly recommend bushskinz bash plate and side steps for any trail driving.

I wasn't aware of this - they all list the same rating on the info sheets..? Thanks!

Up to 2500kg towed weight the ball weight is 250KG. That's 10% of trailer weight, just like any other tow vehicle.
The later models are rated to tow 3000KG but between 2500 and 3000 the ball weight is 180KG.
Cheers, John.

Thanks John, I did read about the newer models (price range explosion though)... I took one for a test - not for me... So I caved and bought another Navara in the end... Too many decisions and the mystical magical low K, nonthrashed Patrol didn't appear.
