How capable is a VW Transporter?

Friends are in the process of purchasing a long wheel base, all wheel drive, diesel Transporter, and having it made into a camper.  In light if this, we're taking a joint trip mid 2016 for a couple of months, over winter.

Can anyone advise please, how capable a Translorter might be on outback roads such as The Plenty Hwy, Birdsville Track, etc?  No serious rock hoping, deep wading, just dirt roads and tracks.

My current work tug is a 2010 long wheel base diesel transporter with the 7 speed auto. It us alway loaded up and on the 3ton GVM day after day. Although all driving is on the black top it is up and down gutters median strips and on driven along foot paths and verges every day 6 days a week. It is not holding up too the abuse and now has problems with suspension sub frame staying bolted to the chassis. The bolts work there way loose and this has now just about stuffed the threads in chassis. Apparently they are going to drop the sub frame motor and box to hopefully repair for once and for all.

The second on going issue is that the A/C compressor hangs below the chassis which see it cop some damage from gutter hoping and the odd large pot hole on the verge. The compressor has been replaced due to said damage.

I had a few different work vans over the years and the VW has been the one I have liked the least.

That's my experience with the transporter any way. Some one always has a bad story about something.

There are plenty of you tube videos of Transporter Syncro's doing rallye raids in europe or taking on nasty tracks around the world. You might be surpirsed as it sure as heck did for me.

If it is pre 2010 and an auto STAY AWAY from it. I had the Multivan and the auto went. Three other friend had them.....all autos went. You are looking at $7500 for reco to $11,000 for a new replacement. I was warned and learnt the hard way. Just google VW autos and you will see the issues. Also parts/servicing is through the roof.

If looking at new look at an iveco daliy 4x4. Single cab has very useable area for mounting a body also do dual cab.
Check out "travel trucks" web site there is others doing the same type as.

Only issue is budget
