Redarc Bms
« on: January 15, 2015, 07:35:49 PM »
Apologies if this topic has been covered,  but we are camping at the moment and have limited internet for searching..
Does anyone have any experience with the Redarc BMS system,  and charging from a generator?
We have a yamaha ef1000is, which won't work with the redarc.
The gennie itself works fine,  just doesn't want to talk to red arc...
Have been using a Honda and it works fine.
Made a lot of calls and the only possible hint we got was that yamaha run a different frequency??

Yeah we did,  the owner is away on holidays and the guy that answered said he doesn't know but they haven't had any problems but they use Honda 1's
He is going to look into it and also suggested calling redarc,  but it's after hours over there.. Will call tomorrow..
Just thought there might be some one here that could wave their wand.
This is so not my department... Why can't I just press a button and make stuff happen?  :-)

I cant see how the use of a Honda or a Yamaha or any other geny could effect the operation of the unit ??? ???

A geny outputs the AC power they are not different in terms of what they produce to a point where an AC will only operate only on a yammy over a honda ..thats just silly for them to say.

Did the unit operate on 24ov mains at home?

Hi,
Try plugging in another small 240V appliance (say bedside lamp)  to your generator at the same time as the charger.
Cheers

Interesting. When we bought our CT it came with the same combination of Redarc BMS and Yamaha generator.
Have never used it myself but presumably the previous owner did. Maybe I should get my finger out and buy a petrol tin and a couple of litres and give it a try.

Lashed out and bought a petrol tin and 5 litres petrol.
Yamaha seems to charge the CT batteries through the Redarc BMS no worries.
Had to change from storage to touring mode and run the fridge to create a load as the batteries were fully charged.
Have you tried to power anything else off the generator ?

When you say it won't work, do you get any indication on the BMS, ie is it seeing 240V or
is the generator not supplying 240V?

I would ask the same question, is it in Storage mode and does the A/C icon come up on the controller.

I have the same unit in a van, works fine on my gennie.

Have heard that if the unit gets a "spike" it will blow the 240 imput, but still work on solar and 12 volt from vehicle.

Ok,  so yes it's in touring mode,  and yes we are getting power from it ie. we can plug in a fan and it works.
It charges on 240 for about 4 minutes then just drops out and won't pick it up again,  unless we switch the eco mode off which then revs is box off.
We tried another yamaha and are now off to try a honda.
Redarc said honda put out more voltage...
Woftam,  how many batteries are you charging?
We have 2 110ah deep cycle gel batteries..

The camper is new to us and to be honest I haven't got as far as checking out the actual battery configuration. But the Redarc says I am charging 150AH AGM so am assuming 2 x 75.

So the issue must be the wattage on eco throttle...

Yammy must have a slightly lower eco wattage setting which is under the amount required to run the BMS..but i would have thought even if on eco and you ask for more that the unit just steps it up.

Very interesting..

Well the Honda ran without missing a beat for about 8 hours I think it was.
Brilliant,  issue solved,  hubby happy he doesn't need a bigger unit,  but yes very interesting why such a difference.
Thank you all for your input :-)

So we have just heard back from Pioneer,  they have just had someone in with there new camper with the same issues,  only they have a Yamaha 2.0kva.
Seems it may be the Yamaha frequency that is the issue.
Apparently you can re-tune the frequency.  Anyone heard of that or done it?
