Any Amplifier Electronics Wizz's ?
« on: December 26, 2014, 06:34:43 AM »
I have an old favourite 15+ year old Rotel amplifier that I use to drive some Dali speakes for my 'Man Cave' projector.

It seems to be having an issue with the right side whereby it cuts out. You then have to turn the right side up full volume to almost 'force' the current through, at which point it comes back, but then cuts out a short time later.

I could try and find an electronics place who would probably charge me more than it would cost to replace, considering its use....and its an oldie but a goodie/favourite

I have swapped cables, and speakers, and contines to do the same to the right side only. Have changed inputs, but regardless of input channel, does the same for the right side only.

Any suggestions ?

Could be a dry joint somewhere. If you are Ok with a soldering iron then running over pcb on that channel might jag it.

I'm not a sparky and  may not be the problem but have found these sorts of problems with gear in the past, ckeck the soldered joints on any circuit boards etc and the board itself  for corrosion or  loose solder .. POWER disconnected of course...
Maybe give any twist type controls a light spray of wd-40 into them and twist them a few times .
Other than that it could be a capacitor / diode or somthing thats failing, look for swelling or  leaking ..
Might be a little bit more moisture in the shed enviroment causing corrosion .

Yep, a dry solder joint would be the most likely cause.

Could also be the volume control is faulty, the potentiometers fail as they age, try turning it up and down
rapidly 20 times or so if this improves the situation you could try cleaning the pot using a contact cleaning
solution available from jaycar in pressure packs, but be careful what type you use as they pots may contain plastic
parts and some cleaning solutions can be very aggressive and melt the plastic. If it is the pot the only permanent
fix will be to replace them but they will be hard to source.
