The opening of the Howqua Gap Track from the Stirling circuit road  to Cornhill for winter use was originally on the Mt Buller/Stirling Development plan in the early 1980s so this isnt a new idea, its been around since before then.

The concept was to provide safe alternative access to Buller in the case of emergency, there have been several times during which the main access route to Buller has been closed by rock slide,  keeping all residents and guests on the mountain for days - not a very safe situation.

This will get up in some form or another this time.

Can see where you are coming from in a safety aspect and your a lot more qualified to talk about this than most of us, but why open a new resort on Stirling? Ok make the roads safer but why waste all this money on a blacktop? Macca's is next on the list. Someone will have to pay for it and the revenue has already started with these newly introduced camping fees. There will probably be some sort of toll fee to pay on it as well. Aside from the sealed rd, severe grating and excavation of existing surrounding tracks will be a given. That's the problem for us 4WDrivers.

Great will now be able to laps up there in the Torrie instead of Lygon st  >:D

I think it will get up initially in the form of a 2WD standard gravel surfaced road from corn hill - (which is where the mt Buller gravel pit is now and has existing 2wd access) to the Circuit road.

My guess is that they probably won't keep the said access road over to Stirling permanently open to vehicle traffic over winter, but be satisfied with knowing it's there in case it's needed to get people off the mountain. This was always the intent years ago, even after the Mt Stirling resort development plans were abandoned.

As it will be within the Mt Buller  resort, yep you would/will pay for it via existing winter resort entry fees. I'm not aware for them to start charging these fees  over summer.

What does concern me is that  During summer it will provide a lot easier access for Numpties who have no idea to go bush, that is a worry.

This has been pushed for many years by a few locals who have strong Political connections. I don't like it either, but I think this time it will get up in some form. Where that leads to down the track ???
