Screen door, paint peeling off.
« on: June 18, 2014, 06:47:24 PM »
Advice please. My so called quality screen door is peeling paint along the bottom. I don't want to buy a new one as I am a tight a%#se. Is it possible to have it sandblasted and repainted? Or should I get it sandblasted and then powdercoated? What is the better option? Replace or repair. Our home is a federation style and the screen door reflects that. Thanks everyone.

Could get it soda blasted, but you need to get quotes to do it all, then a quote for a replacement and see what the difference will be. Without seeing the door.

Here you go see below extract - Take it back to the supplier and hopefully it was powder coated in Australia and not China.  However either way under the BCA the supplier/manufacturer still has to warrant the product even if the extrusion was extruded and powder coated in China.  Just watch out for the supplier as they will try and get out of it by saying you havent  maintained it etc.  However if it is peeling of flaking it was never treated properly before the finish was applied.  It should have a goldy colour underneath which is the chromate.

Dont let them touch it up either as will not last and fade differently as is a wet coat as opposed to a dry coat.  The only way is to have the 'WHOLE" door repowder coated and the powder coater will know how to treat it.

Under the Building code of Australia, all suppliers to the building industry are required to provide a seven year guarantee of products. All Qualicoat members provide this guarantee.

Here's the extract - The powder manufacturer guarantees the coating performance of the Qualicoat approved powder. They do not guarantee the pre-treatment or application of the powder. The pre-treatment and application is guaranteed by the Qualicoat applicator.

Dulux and Interpon have received international Qualicoat approval for their warranty grade powders, along with many other powder manufacturers internationally. Dulux and Interpon both recommend Qualicoat specification.

Standard warranty powders are not guaranteed in some specific harsh environments such as direct coastal exposure. Higher durability powders are available for those conditions.

Coatings need to be reasonably maintained to validate the warranty and maintain the finish. Guidance is available in AS3725 or in the powder manufacturer’s terms and conditions.

The BCA does not give any extra protection over and above manufacturers warranties for fixtures and fittings. It's primarily for structural  health, amenity and sustainability components.

Ie, you can't claim a 7 year warranty for an item that only has a 2 year manufacturers warranty. You can, however, claim for building integrity failures up until that time.

Just take it to your local powdercoater, they will prepare it and re coat it for about $100

Just strip the locks/hinges/mesh out first.

I would like it all cleaned up and start again for the whole door. Not covered by insurance as we purchased it after the house was built from some local screen door manufacturer. Will post pics during daylight.

Mace,

FYI - The powder coat warranty from powder coate suppliers such as Dulux and Interpon is a minimum of 7 years and can be, 10, 15, 20 depending on the particular product  and all quality applicators will provide a 7 year warranty as does any reputable window and door manufacturer.

Click on this link http://www.qualicoat.org.au/warranty.htm from Qualicoat who are the Australian Powder Coating Licensing Authority to read the statement about the BCA and suppliers obligations to the BCA.

From the photos it looks like it is a steel door and the peeling paint doesn't look like powder coating.  Also looks to be some rust at the welds.  You maybe better off just wire brushing and sanding  to remove all flaky paint, treat the rust and paint over with a good quality external paint?

CBF sanding, hence asking about abrasion blasting. Does it cost much? I can rustproof and paint after door is blasted away. Cheers
