It's not such an "out-there" idea to involve the police; that's what they do. Also, using the police is the only legal way to apply "Finders Keepers" if no one claims it. It makes sense for it to be the closest police station. It sounds like the finder of the Cape York camera has come home with the camera and tried to do his own search using forums, without the ability to act on the one piece of evidence that solves the case (the rego).
Years ago I lost a camera near Sheepyard Flat. On the way home we called in to Mansfield Police Station...and collected my camera. On the other hand, when he was about 7 y old my son found a $100 note on the footpath. I told him we should hand it in to the nearest police station. As expected, no one claimed it and a month later my son collected the money.
