Our close call......

After doing all the required safety checks and double checking everything (Hubby used to be in the Fire Service so he is a safety nut) we set off for the 6 1/2 drive home to Brisbane from 1770. We made a toilet stop an hour into the trip at the servo and hubby said "look at this". Seems when I closed and locked the tailgate one clip didn't lock properly. So we had been driving with one lock closed. Not the end of the world. We set off again and slow down for an accident. A prado had managed to vier off to the opposite side of the road and end up, upside down in a ditch. Hopefully no-one was seriously hurt. While driving on the highway hubby drops the f bomb and starts manoeuvring across the lanes because he sees the kids bikes tip over on the bike rack. Talk about a nerve racking 2 minutes to get off the highway and stop. We have a Rhino Bike Rack and somehow the pin that holds the rack up had worked itself out. Fortunately hubby had tied the bikes to the rack as an extra precaution so they didn't just slide off. It doesn't bear thinking about the consequences of losing 2 bikes on the highway, while travelling 100km/hr. Thank goodness not every trip is like that!

I lost a baby swing 10 years ago cos I didn't tie it on properly, I still get upset thinking about it, and it was only a small price compared to a couple of bikes, thats a blessing you didn't loose them or have them drop off your rig.. well done to hubby for stopping in time..

We were very lucky Brumbypt. The highway was seriously busy with everyone coming home late Sunday afternoon and 2 bikes bouncing around on the highway would have caused a serious accident for a lot of people. It would have been very difficult knowing you had caused something like that

Veryl lucky, I also tie everything down, but have also recently after stopping for a drink, fuel etc now go over everything prior to departing as I had some smart a$$ undo the tailgate, my bad for not locking it but it had been off for repairs, it is amazing how much that tailgate swinging around made everything jerk and unstable.     Luckily like you nothing happened except for some swearing and madly trying to get off the gateway

l was following a bloke through Melb in traffic . Pulled up at the lights only to watch his tail gate open & his kitchen roll out  .
A huge blast of the horn & flash of lights back in place , only 1 red faced camper

My wife went up to Caloundra to pick up the Odyssey after a service: coming back she turned off the Gateway at Boondal and whilst she was negotiating the roundabouts in front of the Entertainment Centre the kitchen flew out and landed on the road.  Fortunately the maxitaxi behind her pulled her over to tell her about it (she didn't see it go) and then he loaded it into his taxi to bring it home for her.

Hats off to AORC, they accepted responsibility, came down to pick up the trailer and fixed up the whole thing - but ever since we have been very careful to make sure the kitchen is latched in and locked before heading off.

No, we dont normally travel the babies on the roof rack of the camper...

I still remember how pathetic I tied it on, normally it went in the bag safely out of the wind..

ohh well, I always make sure things are tied on properly now days. even if I use a kilometer of rope..
