Sand Spears - Does any one know where to buy them or how to make them?

Hi there,

I am interested in the idea about Sand Spears to access water from the beaches for showering and washing up. (not for drinking) Does any one know where i can buy on from or how i can make them??

Easy enough to make up [ google it / youtube  ], go to an irrigation /  hose  pump type supplier and second hand spears can be had fairly cheap, think I paid $10 for a 150mm cut off..
Sand spears are prohibited on QLD beaches in QPWS  parks as far as I know now ..
I use my set up to filter water from seepage creeks etc pumped into drums for showers when beach camping on Fraser .
Used to be able to get small units from BCF $80 and Glind shower products for about $120 for one the size I made ..

an awesome product but check first as you are not allowed to use them in most national parks ive looked at, below is what is says about Fraser island. cooloola and bribie island have similar restrictions 

from QPWS...Can I use a water spear device to pierce the ground to obtain water from underground?
No, as this would interfere with a natural resource, which is an offence and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service cannot guarantee the quality of the water.

i have 3 drawings of the original stainless steel type if your interested in making one, a mate of mine has one and it is great.

I have one....but don't think it's the spiral wound type, pretty sure it's a bunch of plates, will have the check. Fairly certain I brought it from springers low voltage many years ago.

They are a easy thing to make yourself
Air is the big killer in being able to draw up from a decent way under the sand, denso tape is great at being able to prevent air entering the system, but is a bit messy

Might be able to get some second hand plastic spears from a hire place or ask around dewatering job site on the coast

My best mate has a sand spear and it’s been fantastic over the last 10+ years which I’ve been camping with him. We purely use his for shower water and at different times it’s provided shower water for a group of 30 campers for 7 nights straight.

Yes we know the National Parks say they are not to be used, but rangers have come into camp to check permits but they have always turned a blind eye to it. I believe the biggest concern the National Parks have it people catching Hepatitis if a previous camper did a number 2 just up from where you dig your spear in.

Some years we have only had to dig a 60cm hole to get usable water, but other years we have had to dig down 2m before we found usable water. Have to say that’s hard work when going down 2m as also means the top of the hole is about 3m wide to avoid cave-ins while someone is on the hole digging.

It's easiest to sink the spear in sand by reverse flow down the spear
This action will work the spear in pretty quick
Or else get a hand auger for use in sand, also good for getting those #2's deep
