Roofrack mounted lights would only be illegal if wired in to operate with high beam, by my reading of the regulations. If questioned, the owner would refer to them as work place illumination lights, specifically mounted away from the front of the vehicle so as to not be confused as driving lights.

I;m with you BJ, having a light bar on your car is not illegal ,using it on the road is, just like so many other mods we all have, Wire it up on a seperate switch marked "offroad lights" or "worklamps"and when pulled over you should get no grief , even pull the fuse out. As for people using them on the road ,Well thats a different story.

Interestingly my new trition has a factory rear difflock , when it's engaged the ABS stops working and the dash light tells me that I have no ABS. I am sure I have read somewhere that modifications that effect saftey features are illegal. The way they prob get around this is that the owners handbook says "for offroad use only" . So if I used my difflock onroad (I know you never would but bear with me) my car would be illegally modifed as I would have lost a saftey feature of the car.

My point is that if it is designed for offraod use or worklamp use, then use it in that fashion and you will have no probs , but if you are, as others have said a white light warrior then you might loose some $$$.

Have a look at most lighting catalogues , Driving lamps are listed , then "worklamp" is the term used to cover led lightbars. the maunfacturers know the laws and the product discription is the answer , a worklamp is a worklamp and a driving light is a drivinglight , and I'd be pretty sure a magistrate would see it the same way if push came to shove.

but where led lighbars are concearned the cost of the damm things is the real offence IMHO LOL ;D ;D ;D

:D Mmmm, my problem is now I have to fit another light (bull with orange cover) and have no space....
Unfortunately there is another rule which states, extra lights cannot be above, I think, 1.2m off the ground, and also can't impede vision which means it cannot be above the bonnet line basically.  Oh well I was going to modify the bar anyway  ;D
No I don't know how trucks get away with it.
If you want lights on your roof there is not a drama, so long as they are covered so they can't be used on-road.
The other is now it is illegal to have a rotating beacon fitted to your vehicle or something, work just gave me a letter that must be carried in the truck that states it is a necessary item/mines requirement.  Maybe it's allowed too if it's covered....
It just used to be if you were using it without reason $300 or so.

My last look at the regs in QLD was you were only aloud 4 forward facing light inc your factory head lights.
And nothing above your bonnet line.
So if your spotties on top of your bull bar, on your roof or roof racks were wired up to you head light low or high beam, they are illeagle.
Even my spot light on my roof 1 in the middle is illeagle.
The only way around this is as stated before off road use only......
We use to have to have a switch next to the light on the outside of the vehicle so the driver can not turn it on while driving.
Not just QLD but all main road rules are s#*t...

Actually it doesn't, bull bars are fine if they meet the required rules about such things as no sharp edges ( because you don't want to cut someone when you hit them with more than two tonnes of vehicle) cant impede forward vision, mustn't impact (excuse the pun) on the vehicles air bag deployment and a few others.

All these driving light rules have been in place for years. I ran driving lights in my roof knowing the rules, just never used them in situations where they were going to draw undue attention.

I was coming home from a snow trip where I had slid off the track and smashed my headlights, bull bar and windscreen. We managed to get the driving lights working so bolted them to the roll bar so I had some lights. Got pulled over as they were wobbling about. The policeman just told me make sure they weren't wobbling and to ensure they didn't shine into oncoming traffic. He didn't notice the missing windscreen, my blue face or the no headlights. Sometimes you get :)

Well, it seems there has been a common sense update to this rule surrounding spotlights in pairs in QLD.

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/Safety/Vehicle%20standards%20and%20modifications/Vehicle%20standards/Vehicle%20standards%20instructions/drivinglampsvehiclesguidelinemay13.pdf

Can now have a an odd number of lights up front.
This is QLD only, other states will have their own rules.   WA will still ping you for a single light bar, as per a recent post on another forum

I've managed to bypass all this  kerfuffle by always setting up camp & enjoying a palate cleansing ale or two before sunset. No need for zillion candle power lights.
