Which Cabin Tent
« on: May 09, 2013, 06:46:17 PM »
hello,my daughter and her man have been using a swag when they come camping with us,but now that i have become a grand daddy(they had a little girl ;D) they are needing something a little more family friendly
While not in the position to look at a camper trailer he has been looking at some tents.....cabin type tents to be specific...
Anyway, there is a lot of crap out there,he checked out some diamantina tents and said they looked a little flimsy(floor to thin...zippers ****e)but did like the look of the kulkyne stuff, but without seeing them first hand its a bit hard to tell
Does any one have much experience in the tent field that could recommend a quality set up...
Cheers

Two of the best
Southern Cross or Freedom tents is my bet. Big $$$$ but good quality.

You can't go wrong with SCC, but I have heard good things on the oz trails as a more wallet friendly option?

Wholehog, just before Christmas last our daughter, hubby & g/son were planning to get into tenting. The had their eye on a tent round the $600 mark new. It was a generic sort of brand, can't remember what but it wasn't a brand I though would last to well.

I talked them out of that one and we found a S/H Black Wolf Turbo tent (the 3M x 3M one) with a fly proof extension. They are super solid, quick erect and very well made & cost round $900....S/Hand.

Off they headed to Narooma and experienced some of the strongest winds for years, daughter quotes 95KPH but who knows, it was strong w/o doubt.

Their tent remained erected and weather proof. The next morning the skip bin at the C/P was full of smashed poles and ripped tents that could not handle the weather.

To say they were then full of confidence in the tent is an understatement.

The other spin off is that had they gone with a cheapie and it got flattened/smashed then they may well have been put off camping for life.

The Black Wolf tents also come in a lite-weight material model, I would stay with the heavier(dearer) one.

The old saying buy once, cry once is so true.

Like above, the Southern cross and the Black Wolf in the canvas model, also have look at the oztent, all have their pros and cons, but if you want a quality family tent that will keep the rain out and withstand a storm then expect to spend at least $1000 to $1500. As SambOz stated, confidence in your tent is everything, spend the money and enjoy many years of comfortable camping.

I have a KIWI Camping Co. "Balmoral" Cabin tent
http://www.kiwicamping.co.nz/kiwi_camping.cfm?product_id=1004&page_obj_id=121&prod_cat_id=22&prodlist=1004,1290,1644,1975,2012,2011,1291,1293,1292

This tent is the absolute best tent I have ever seen. It takes about half an hour to set up by myself, but the strength and quality is outstanding. Pissed down, and cold at the South Coast over Christmas, not a drop of water in the tent. Never even had any seepage through the canvas where the beds were leaning against the walls.
I got it 2nd hand for $600, it was only used a couple of times, and in new condition.
Take your time, look around. The space we have in this tent is fantastic, but its too big to fit in a sedan with any other gear, and too heavy to lift onto the roof of a 4wd without pooping yourself.
The BW Turbo tent is also a great tent, awesome for 1-2 night stays, but for 2+ days its definitely the big cabin tent for me.
Cheers,
Mick

This one is good value brand new, seen a couple of the slightly smaller ones set up many times.  Good quality, although not near the Southern Cross quality - but neither is the price:

As mentioned by another user, I'd consider getting a Blackwolf Turbo tent - smaller, but heaps quicker to set up, but still canvas.

We have the southern cross extreme trekker with the largest awning (cant remember the size)...
I have had it 8-10 yrs.. Fantastic tent, so much room, and that back part is where we used to put the porta-cot.. They aren't cheap, but are top quality.

it will probably be forsale in the next few weeks.

Tents need to have cover out over the door as the sloping walls allow rain in every time you open/shut the door.

An awning/door cover that is as only as wide as the door still lets water in from the sides.  To be suitable for all weather use it has to provide shelter from above and the sides, ie - all the way to the ground to keep the entry dry in wet weather.

I have two tents w/o the sheltered door and they are a pain in wet weather.

I bought a similar one 2nd hand and then took it to SC and they made some alterations for nicks. The Phone number for SC doesn't even have the 9 in front of it so goes to show how old it is. Might sell it soon.
