Broke the Tigerz awning.
« on: April 30, 2013, 10:40:14 AM »
Didn't take long...

Set it up on a windless day. Didn't peg it down. Went out canoeing.

Of course a gust of wind grabbed it and broke the plastic brackets that hold the horizontal poles out.

Any one have any ideas if replacement parts are available anywhere?

I bought a few of them off ARB! At the time only cost a couple of dollars but a mate went and grabbed a couple off them the other day and they are now up around $20!!

Thanks Gents!

I wasn't even going to ask Tigerz!   I thought "as if!"

Alloy replacements..... I would rather have the plastic ones break under stress and have spares than the alloys to not break and bend things!!!!!

I have the alloy hinges on mine.
I understand the sentiment about rather having a weak point, but as everyone who has a similar style awning, they have learnt to always peg it.
If pegged down nothing should break. I always have mine pegged down now, and funnily enough was after a similar incident where I learnt my lesson. Personally go for the alloy hinges, much stronger and more durable IMO.

Ask Tigerz11. I got given the aluminium ones for free when i bought my rear awning a couple of weeks ago.

If you tell them your "failed on first use" story surely they will help?

It didn't fail on first go.  I have used it about 5 times prior to this.  This is the first time i didn't peg it down.  Totally my mistake.

FWIW. Tigerz wanted $5 each for them and $13 shipping and one of their dealers wanted $9 each and $5 shipping.  LOL.

i emailed them when mine broke (first use they broke as i was swinging them out no stress on them at all just a weak plastic hinge)

i was sent 2 alloy replacements free and they are much better.

only wish i have is that i could find some that pivoted up and down as well that are also able to be locked in place - straight out. this would allow the awning to angle down away from the vehicle for those times you want to swag it or for some extra protection and would take the stress out of the backing plate if it happened to be on a slight angle when mounted to the roof rack.

i since "lost" my awning due to a wind gust that bent all the poles and tore it off the mounting/backing plate new poles and some odds and ends to reattach it to the backing plate will make it reusable but i bought a ironman one and it is a much better quality unit
