Insuring kayaks?
« on: March 30, 2013, 10:42:40 AM »
We have a couple of Hobie kayaks which cost us about $4500 to buy. We are having trouble insuring them. We obviously lock them up when traveling etc and they are in a locked shed at home but it is a lot of money to have sitting around to get stolen or damaged. Our house is currently insured with NRMA and they will insure some things outside the home but not kayaks.

I used to have other sporting gear valued at similar amounts (probably more) insured by NRMA including saddles and riding gear for my girls when they competed their horses and it was all covered outside the home.

Any ideas anyone? Not able to include on the vehicle either.

We would be have to change insurers if we got the right deal.

Maybe an insurance broker? We've got a couple of Hobies which are secured in the shed behind a locked gate complete with roving land shark. When we're away with them we keep them close to the kamper - thinking of security cables from GGPatrol to put through the drive well to secure them to the kamper.

Hi,
I know of some kayaks that were insured at normal marine rates years ago. However they got written off in white water fairly regularly and the insurance company said "No more!"
The rates were ridiculously cheap as the value of the kayak was not very much, but at the price it was a bargain.
Not sure whether this is why you are having trouble finding cover for them.
Does not your normal house hold cover include them if they are normally (i.e. most of the time) stored with in the premises?

cheers

Our hobies are covered as part of accidental insurance policy with our home insurance. Check the fine print or give your insurer a call.

Hi Austar & Skinnee,

I have been into NRMA offices and they looked through the policy and it exempts kayaks specifically. Skinnee, who is your insurer?

The kayaks are covered at home while in the shed but not on the car, water or when they are with us while camping. We lock them up as much as we could, but this apparently doesn't deter some villans.

CGU or St George , insurance has been cheaper for us through our bank.
