Portable toilet
« on: February 21, 2013, 02:23:15 PM »
To keep the good lady happy I am going to purchase a portable toilet and one of those quick erect shower/toilet tents.
We're do people store the toilet when travelling?  In the trailer, in the back of the ute? Do you put in something like bag? Have you had any spills?

Cheers

We have a Thetford Porta Poti 345 and it is carried in the rear of our Ultimate Off Road Camper.

Ulti's have a cupboard accessible from inside the camper - or outside designed specifically for the Thetford (see the pic below in my sig - click on it to enlarge - rear quarter panel on the Ulti is where the Thetford lives), and that's what most Ultimate owners seem to have.   It 'straps down' so it doesnt move about while we're on (or off) road...

For extended stays, we use an Oztent shower/toilet tent and after watching the YouTube video a couple of times, its pretty easy to fold up (now!)

Never had a 'spill' and while the Thetford chemicals are expensive, they work, and the smell is more than acceptable (to me anyway)...  There's quite a bit of info on this forum and others on chemicals, including some 'cheaper' approaches than the Thetford chemicals...  We use the chemicals that can be used in a septic (ie acceptable to septic tank dump points)..

Always thoroughly clean the '345' when we come home and store it outside the camper in the shed until next trip...   ;D

We use to keep our Porta Pot inside the front tool box on our soft floor camper, then on our last trip I removed the jerry can holder and put a plank of wood in and kept the Porta Pot there.  See photo.  We have also just strapped it down on top of the front tool box until we could find a dump point. It may not have looked then prettiest there, but it was functional as a carry spot.  In our new hard floor camper we will be keeping it in the large front tool box.
We have a carry bag for it, but the one KB has posted looks a lot better. Our current one is just plastic and is wearing out from rubbing. Kevin.

We also carry a Thetford which fits through the front hatch of the camper trailer so once the camper is set up we can just pull it out and place it in the appropriate place.  It is also easy to access when due to be emptied at a dump point if none where we are staying, or ground too hard to dig a deep hole for contents.   We carry several old towels which we place under, over and around the potti during travel but have never had a spill yet even over some very rough terrain.  We use the Thetford green chemical (which is the allegedly biodegradable one) over the various alternatives trialed by many simply because I haven't had time to muck around with quantities of nappi san or similar.

We carry ours in the big toolbox at the front .. Only spill we have had is from filling the flush tank too high as the cap is not water/air tight  - We use the Aldi green and pink chemicals and Coles Nappisan  -
We also only use it for night-time wees -

We have a simple Aldi special, with Aldi chemicals.
Only used by SWMBO over night, as we have not really been bush yet (working on it).

What ever you buy, ensure the bottom tank is larger than the top tank.
I still find it hard to believe, but it is true, that some manufacturers build these loo's with a bottom/waste tank smaller than the top/flush tank..

We have a Thetford one and carry it in a canvas bag made by Infront www.infrontcampinggear.com.au and very happy with it.

Only spill ever was from the flush tank when filled right up that is just fresh water and the lid it not sealed. The toilet rides inside the camper at the end of the bed with a strap around it to hold in place as it is quite heavy when full of water and the clothes bags would not stop it from sliding around.

Thanks for the infront site - I had heard about this site - some great stuff there on the canvas side!    ;D

Good bag but three times the price of the Oztrail bag mentioned above.  Although I think Infront have a special going at the meoment.

Greg,

Ours is a Thetford 365 - the big one. When we were buying there wasn't much price difference between the off-brand ones and the proper Thetford ones. I figured that given what it's carrying, there's no point in cheaping out and saving $20. It lives in the toolbox on the camper, like so:

You can see the tie-down points, and the foam matting. What's not shown:
* We actually use the wide woven occy straps from Bunnings with the carabiner ends, not the ones shown
* There's two straps that go around - the one shown, and one further down.
* One of the spare old towels goes around the potty, so the straps don't rub on the plastic
* Another spare towel is laid on the lid - there's not much gap between the lid and the toolbox lid, the towel stays there nicely
* There's a square of that non-slip matting underneath

Downsides:
* To clear the latches on the toolbox, the potty needs to be towards the centre of the box as shown. It's quite difficult to lift it in and out of the toolbox when it's heavy, due to having to lean right over the stone guard.
* You look like a goose after you've lifted it up and out, because you end up with it in a big bear hug. Other campers look at you funny as you walk around the trailer, cuddling your toilet.
* Nothing else.

We either set it up in a separate shower tent, or at night it usually lives in the camper with us. No smell, no mess, no fuss. We use the bio thetford chemicals, and find the resulting clean up not too bad.

Biggest tip I can give - don't empty it as soon as you get home. I know the temptation is to get the worst job out of the way first, but trust me. Give it a couple more days for the chemicals to work their magic, then clean it out. You'll be much happier. Don't leave it much longer than a few days though, for obvious reasons.

Good luck!
Matto :)
