Just saying hi
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:56:29 PM »
Hi all,
Recently went on a camping holiday with the outlaws, first time in many years. We had a ball, saw some amazing setups and that got the "Finance Minister" and I talking about purchasing a CT and doing more trips.
We are experienced hikers, walking many of the trails and bush Vic has to offer but havn't been out since the youngens came along, they are 4 and 1.
Came across the forum early Jan and must have read nearly every thread, some excellent knowledge and advice.
We are not planning on getting off road much as we are a 1 vehicle family and the Commodore might not be too good for really off road.
I've already started the research looking and too many websites to count and narrowed our choice to, oh about 143!!
The first real question I have is how many people get around in a 2wd and stay mainly on road?
Looking forward to more reading and research.
Cheers
Ashmo

Welcome Ashmo.  You will be surprised where you will be able to get with your Commodore.  For a start nearly all CPs  :D  A heap of NPs are accessible by 2WD.  They might have a dirt/gravel access road but most of those roads are well maintained and can be driven sensibly in a 2WD.  A lot of folks get a 4WD for the weight they can legally tow and importantly the tow ball rating not necessarily their four wheel drive capability.  Just remember when you are searching for your CT make sure that the Commodore can handle the weight and has the tow ball rating to pull it.

Happy camping

G'day Ashmo,

To Myswag,
You'll spent many hours here cause there is plenty of great info here to help you guys get the most out of your setup.
There a lot of swaggers that have a 2wd vehicle, it doesn't matter what you've got as long as you're enjoying yourself and the wonderful country.
Hope you enjoy your time here.
Happy & Safe travels.

You don't use magic to disappear, all you need is a 4wd & a Swag ;)

Welcome... I think you would be surprised how far you can go in a commodore.  You will notice often in the outback all the tourists have big 4x4s with lifts, winches, etc.  The locals drive commodores and other sedans.  Obviously the wild and woolly tracks will not work, but here in Qld the tracks through the national parks are getting tamer and tamer and very doable in a two wheel drive.  Talking to fellow Myswaggers if there is a particular place you want to go will tell you whether you can get there!  Just keep an eye on the weather.  Easy can become difficult very quickly!
Oooh! Goldfish!
